In Astrology: Understanding the Birth Chart, Kevin Burk takes you step-by-step from the core basics to the finer complexities of chart interpretation while avoiding sidetracks into obscure techniques and fuzzy thinking. As a teacher, Burk also understands that a real grasp of the subject entails more than just learning the techniques-it also involves grasping the underlying principles that make those techniques valid.

Astrology: Understanding the Birth Chart is designed to be useful to all students of astrology, from beginners to more advanced practitioners, and will help you develop an integrated, synthesized approach to understanding the birth chart. You will discover how classical astrology can enrich your understanding of the planets, signs, and houses. You will explore the meaning of the Lunar Nodes, eclipses, the angles, retrograde planets, and aspect patterns. You will also learn how to identify key themes in the chart, and how to relate the different aspects and elements together to gain a holistic understanding of the birth chart-and of the individual. An up-to-date listing of astrological organizations and software programs is included that offers a wealth of resources for any astrologer.

In short, this is a well-designed course that provides a solid foundation for anyone who is interested in practicing astrology quickly and with confidence. While many books at this level simply give you a set of techniques and ready-made interpretations, this book will give you a deeper grasp of an art and science that has its expression in the world around us, but its roots in the invisible world of primal origins.

This is one of the best books I have found on interpreting natal charts. The author does a good job describing the process and how everything fits together. Read full review

I really don't know or understand why modern astrologers keep describing Leo as though it was some emotionally weak, vain, little show kitty rather than the powerful, fierce, tempermental, courageous, passionate, and aggressive LION it is! Where did they get that stuff from? The ancients did not describe Leo like that! Those descriptions do not sound like they're portraying the near invincible Nemean Lion who fought HERCULES himself and bit off his finger!
A lion does not need the approval of sheep. The Sun does not need the attention of the planets. They need it, not the other way around. I'm sick and tired of astrologers describing Leo in the most shallow and superficial terms. Mars does very well in Leo, the warrior-king and conqueror of the Zodiac.
And its rulership of the heart is not about "universal love" or whatever. It's not ruled by Venus and it's not symbolized by a dove. It's ruled by the vital and powerful Sun and symbolized by the fierce and powerful lion. Its rulership of the heart means courage, strength, passion, and intensity. After all, why doesn't Aries' rulership of the head and brain make it the most logical and intellectual sign then?
So again...please describe Leo as the mighty and fierce LION it is and not the little show kitty you people want to tame it into. Leo does not need anyone's attention, approval, or validation. Just like an actual lion, it's capable, powerful, and courageous whether others believe in it or not. Liking attention and needing it are two very different things.
