CRC World Dictionary of Medicinal and Poisonous Plants: Common Names, Scientific Names, Eponyms, Synonyms, and Etymology (5 Volume Set)
"Following on the successes of two previous dictionary projects, the CRC World Dictionary of Plant Names and the CRC World Dictionary of the Grasses, Umberto Quattrocchi has undertaken this dictionary of economically important plants.... He has done for these plants what was so admirably done in his other works—brought the vast and scattered literature on plant names, and in this case, too, their uses, into coherent order so that the inquisitive scholar can get a foothold."
The CRC World Dictionary of Medicinal and Poisonous Plants: Common Names, Scientific Names, Eponyms, Synonyms, and Etymology provides the starting point for better access to data on plants used around the world in medicine, food, and cultural practices. The material found in the five volumes has been painstakingly gathered from papers of general interest, reports and records, taxonomic revisions, field studies, herbaria and herbarium collections, notes, monographs, pamphlets, botanical literature, and literature tout court. It includes sources available at various natural history libraries, floras and standard flora works, local floras and local histories, nomenclatural histories, and the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.

After the Rio de Janeiro Convention on Biological Diversity, there has been a greater resurgence of interest in the documentation of all the potential economically and medicinally important plants and this book is no exception. The compendium entitled "CRC World Dictionary of Medicinal and Poisonous Plants", is worth a book in any researchers library/bookshelf working particularly in the field of Medicinal Plants or Traditional Knowledge. The book has delivered the requisite amount of information in an eloquent way, without much scientific hassles and which makes it so easy for general public to follow and practice. The inclusion of Scientific names along with relevant synonyms, common names (in English), vernacular names (in so many different trans-boundary languages), distribution (country-wise) and uses of the plant parts (viz., stem, leaf, bark, flowers, fruits and roots) in specific to traditional Siddha and Unani system of medicine has added much more brightness in delivering the content to the users. The present endeavor is a timely effort and welcome step towards documentation and generation of infromation on Medicinal Plants of the World.
