ordinary compound engines and condenser. Give the dimensions of the leading parts, and shew the arrangement and size of flues and chimney.

5. In the above boiler, give details and dimensions of (i) rivets and joints (transverse and longitudinal), (ii) method of attachment and strengthening of internal flues or tubes.

6. Design a chain suitable for gearing a 40-inch bicycle wheel to 64 inches. Shew the sizes and form of the teeth, and calculate the torque on the axle when a rider who weighs 170 lbs. rides up an incline of 1 in 10 at a speed of 6 miles an hour, the bicycle weighs 50 lbs.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.

THIRD PAPER.

The Board of Examiners.

N.B.-Six hours allowed for this paper.

Candidates are

expected to use books and instruments. All drawing to be done on the paper provided. Credit will be given for both drawings and calculation.

The candidate is to make detailed drawings illustrative of the main features of any one of the following mechanical plants:

(1) A plant for working two passenger and two goods lifts in a large hotel. Give details of lifting machinery, and mode of utilizing the town water pressure of 80 lbs. per square inch.

(2) A fire engine not to weigh more than two tons, and to be capable of discharging 400 gallons per minute at a pressure of 100 lbs. per square inch. Give drawings of pump, steam engine, and boiler.

(3) An electric power station for working a tramway eight miles long, requiring 60 electric horse-power. Give details of dynamos with

commutators.

(4) A pile-driving plant for driving piles up to 50 feet long, to drive four piles simultaneously by

steam.

(5) A crushing plant, to crush 100 tons of hard quartz in an hour. Explain how you would be guided as to the number and position of the crushers you would employ, and shew how you would drive them from the prime motor.

MINING.

Mr. William Nicholas.

1. Describe how you would stope" and make secure a wide quartz reef, possessing soft walls. 2. Mention the advantages that crushing rolls have over the ordinary gravitation stamper battery. 3. Mention the advantages obtained by the use of rock-boring machines for blasting.

4. Describe a hydraulic elevator, as used in alluvial mines, and state under what circumstances they are used.

5. State how you would fix pumps, and the necessary gear in a shaft 500 feet in depth in order to drain a mine, and give sketch diagrams showing the relative positions of "drawing lift," "setsoff," "cisterns," "plungers," "clacks," "doorpieces," &c.

6. What is the object of "poppet legs"?

Describe the construction of wooden ones fitted with the usual appliances.

7. Mention the kinds of dykes associated with goldbearing reefs, and state their respective modes of

occurrence.

8. What is understood by "beach-combing," and how is it carried out?

9. Describe the mining terms "reef," "stull-piece," "winze," (6 99 cam, "horse of ground," "disc," "grating," "gad,” “pass,' ""rise."

[ocr errors]

10. Enumerate points to be considered before laying out works on a mineral property, both on the surface and underground.

11. What variation from the dead level would you make in drives, cross-cuts, or tunnels? In what direction should the incline be, and state reasons?

12. What are the usual accidents and diseases to which miners are liable, and what precautions should be taken to avoid them?

NOTE.-Illustrative sketches will enhance the value of replies to questions and explanations.

METALLURGY.

The Board of Examiners in Chemistry.

1. Describe the best means of removing carbon, sulphur, and phosphorus from pig-iron, so as to convert it into malleable iron.

2. How would you analyse a sample of pig-iron ?

3. What are the essential features of the Patio, Von Patera, and Ziervogel processes for the extraction of silver?

4. What are the chief properties and the applications of nickel? Describe the preparation of nickel carbonyl, and show how the metallurgy of nickel may be influenced by its discovery.

5. Mention the more common impurities of commercial copper, and state which are the most injurious. Describe an eletrolytic process for obtaining pure copper from the ordinary metal.

6. What are the chief properties and the uses of antimony? Describe the English process for reducing antimony ores.

L

METALLURGY-PRACTICAL.

The Board of Examiners in Chemistry.

1. Examine qualitatively the given samples of ores. 2. Assay the given sample of argentiferous galena.

Give a full written report of your experiments and results.

EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF B.C.E.

HYDRAULIC AND SANITARY ENGINEERING.

PAPER I.

The Board of Examiners.

Design in outline, giving dimensions of pipes, reservoirs, &c., the scheme of Water Supply sketched out on the accompanying plans. The population is 800, and the railways require 20,000 gallons per day. The stream is permanent, and the water of good quality.

Supply estimates of cost of the works, &c., Melbourne prices being adopted.
