POSTSCRIPT.

The Student is recommended to read over the whole of the preceding Vocabulary, that the principle of contraction may be thoroughly impressed upon his memory. He should then transcribe in Shorthand the Logograms of most frequent recurrence, that his eye may be accustomed to the aspect of the contractions. The leading abbreviations, however, will, in most cases, be remembered after a single reading.

The Vocabulary is not limited to words in common popular use; it contains also many scientific and other terms, which, though, perhaps rarely met with, must be provided for, in order to complete the system for the reporting of Philosophical Lectures, the proceedings of Learned Societies, &c. Moreover, the Vocabulary does not include all words of frequent occurrence in the language, for the obvious reason that the "curt" writing of many of these is so simple as not to admit of further contraction. Of this class are numerous words ending in the various Alphabetic Terminations, which require no more than a single consonant with a termination symbol, to express them in the ordinary curt writing; such as operate, utterance, elegant, ardent, imitate, innocent, enemy, &c. &c.
