This book (formerly one of the most popular of our Chronicles, no less than twelve editions having been printed) is familiar to every reader of the Spectator, as the standard work always referred to by Sir Roger de Coverley in any question relating to the history of our country. The author has modestly informed us, that "if all other Chronicles were lost, posterity would be suffici. ently informed of every thing memorable in past times, by reading his only." Anthony Wood, Daines Barrington, and Alexander Chalmers, speak very favourably of his labours.
