ἔφεπε.] An inversion of the common Epic use. For suppression of object, cf. 1. 1. 40, Pyth. II. 17.

12. Κρόνιε.] Cf. Pyth. II. 18. 13. πόρον τ.] For the simple connective where we might expect a preposition, cf. v. 47.

14. σφίσιν...γένει.] Don. says σφίσιν for αὐτῶν. But rather the second dative explains and extends the first. Cf. Οl. VIII. 83, ὅν σφιν Ζεὺς γένει ὤπασεν, Pyth. I. 7, ἐπί οἱ νεφέλαν ἀγκύλῳ κρατί...κατέχευας. Eur. Bacch. 336, ἡμῖν τε τιμὴ παντὶ τῷ γένει προσῇ.

16. ἐν.] Cf. v. 63, Ο1. νι. 12, νιι. 69. For sentiment cf. Simonides, Frag. 69 (111), τὸ γὰρ γεγενημένον οὐκέτ ̓ ἄρεκτον ἔσται.

21. The metaphor is probably from the turning of a wheel, which alternately raises and lowers any point on the periphery. Cf. Tib. 1. 5. 70, Versatur celeri Fors levis orbe rotae.

22. ὑψηλόν.] Proleptic.

εὐθρόνοις.] From Pyth. III. 94 this would seem to be more than a mere epithet of royalty.

23. δὲ πιτνεῖ.] The corrections δ ̓ ἐπίτνει and δ ̓ ἔπιτνεν are unwarranted. The overthrow of the calamity would not be regarded as a continuous act in any case, nor was bliss attained gradually in these particular instances, therefore the Historic Pres. is far better than the Imp.

26. Παλλάς.] Mentioned because of the worship of Pallas Onka at Thebes, cf. Aesch. Sept. c. Theb. 164, and of Pallas Lindia at Agrigentum, the building of whose temple offered Thêro the opportunity of seizing the tyranny.

30. κέκριται.] Verily for mortals no set time of death is determined, nor (is it determined) if ever we shall bring to its close a peaceful day, child of the Sun, with unimpaired good; for at different times divers currents come to men bearing both joys and trials.' Cf. Theognis 381 (373), ovdé τι κεκριμένον πρὸς δαίμονός ἐστι βροτοῖσιν, | οὐδ ̓ ὁδός, ἤν τις ἰὼν ἀθανά τοισιν ἅδοι.

32. ὁπότε.] Cf. Thuk. I. 2, ἄδηλον ἂν ὁπότε τις ἐπελθὼν.....ἄλλος ἀφαιρήσεται.

παῖδ ̓ ἀελίου.] For confusion of objects and Personifications, cf. Ol.

33. ῥοαί.] Cf. Nem. xΙ. 46, προμαθείας δ ̓ ἀπόκεινται ῥοαί, ' currents (of future events) lie out of reach of foresight.' For form of expression, cf. Ol. VII. 95, Pyth. III. 104, Isth. III. 23. Heyne and Böckh join μετέβαν, but the compound with és would require the indication or implication of the place whence. For position of κal cf. v. 28, of prep. Pyth. ii. 11. The metaphor in poaí is not from tides, which are insignificant in the Mediterranean. Cf. Isth. III. 18, Eur. Andr. 349, Herc. Fur. 739, παλίρ ῥους πότμος.

35. πατρώϊον.] Extension of predicate. For sentiment cf. Nem. v. 40, πότμος συγγενής.

37. πῆμα παλιντρ.] ‘Sad reverse.'

38. μόριμος.] Cf. Ol. III. 10, VI. 8, Pyth. II. 2.

40. παλαίφατον.] As noun ; 'antient oracle,' lit. antiently spoken.'

41. οξεία. ] Paley best, keen-eyed. The adj. is in fact adverbial. Cf. Nem. x. 62, ὀξύτατον ὄμμα.

43. Θέρσανδρος.] An Adrastid by his mother Argia, daughter of Adrastos.

ἐριπέντι.] The reading of the best ass. and Aldine Ed., found also by Apollônios Dyskolos the grammarian (A.D. 117–161), and needlessly altered by him to έριπόντι, from analogy of Homeric intrans. ἤριπον.

νέοις.] The only instance I know of νέος = ‘of the young, as epithet of externals, is Soph. Αj. 510, νέας τροφῆς στερηθείς. νέα φροντίς, ν. διάνοια, νεαρὰν ἀρετάν, are not to the point. I have thought that the games instituted by Adrastos (cf. Nem. Ιx. 9—12) at Sikyon are meant.

44. μάχαις.] In the war of the Epigoni and the fight in Mysia, in which he showed himself the foremost of the Hellênes in prowess and was slain by Têlephos.

46. σπέρματος.] I take the geni

tive to be in a sort of apposition with ὅθεν, cf. Ol. VII. 24; as the poet would hardly make ῥίζαν antecedent to σπέρμα. Don. is misleading, for here the pigav is derived from the θάλος, through, as I take it, the σπέρμα which the θάλος bears, while in Aesch. Suppl. 105, which he compares, νεάζει πυθμὴν δι ̓ ἁμὸν γάμον τεθαλώς (far better than τὸ θάλλος, see Paley), the old stock sprouts.

ἔχοντα.] Most ass. give ἔχοντι ῥίζαν. προ Besides the awkwardness of the asyndeton, and the necessity of supplying a subject for ἔχοντι from v. 36, the Pindaric doctrine of γνήσιαι ἀρεταί is not so well enforced as by the text. Four Mss. (three 13th cent.) give the v. 1. ἔχοντα. We can infer from the Schol. that Aristarchos (B.C. 156) read ἔχοντα, but that Didymos got his punctuation with the reading ἔχοντι, probably a careless alteration due to the neighbourhood οἱ πρέπει.

47. λυρᾶν τε.] Cf. v. 13.

51. τὸ δὲ τυχεῖν.] ‘Now to win when essaying a contest sets one free from its hardships. τυχεῖν equiv. to eŮTuxeîv. Cf. Pyth. III. 104.

52. Svodpovâv.] So Dindorf. Most editors, after inferior мss., read δυσφρόνων. Most mss. give the obvious gloss δυσφροσύναν οι -as, perhaps suggested by Hes. Theog. 528, ἐλύσατο δυσφροσυνάων.

pépe.] 'Bringeth opportunity for divers aims, suggesting a deep yearning for noble quests.'

τῶν τε καὶ τῶν.] Cf. Pyth. VII. 22. Generally used of varieties; but of opposites Isth. III. 51, Theogn. 398.

54. μέριμναν.] Cf. Ol. I. 108. άypoтéρav.] On the form, cf. Pyth. III. 4. Here eager in pursuit.' Pyth. Ix. 6, 'huntress.'

55. ἀρίζηλος.] From ἀρι-διηλος, api-diFnλos, from DIV. For termination, cf. κ-ηλος. In δῆλος the iota is absorbed.

ἐτυμώτατον.] Both ετήτυμος and TUμos are, I believe, superlative forms connected with éreó-s. Cf. Skt. satyatama-s. In ervμos either -τη- is dropped by dissimilation, as in τράπεζα from τετραπεζα, or it is formed with ma instead of -tama, and y is dropped. The reading of the best мss. is rejected here for ἐτήτυμον, the loss of the syllable being set straight by taking ὀρθαῖς, ἔβα, for the better supported ὀρθαῖσι, ἐπέβα, υυ. 75, 95. In υυ. 15, 35, πεπραγμένων, πατρώϊον have the first syllable scanned long. The fault lies with the metrical Schol. who may have gone by the first two epodes, reckoning the doubtful syllables short, and the grammarians who interpolated åλaθινόν. I venture to think the metro of the text is more consonant with the rest of the rhythm than that of the critics.

Böckh suggests et γέ μιν ἔχων, the sense of which is grammatically clear, but not in accordance with Pindar's views; for he would not think the glory to be attained through wealth combined with virtues dependent on knowledge of the after-life. Rauchenstein, Tafel, Don. read εὖ δέ μιν ἔχων ‘if a person possesses this (i.e. wealth adorned by virtue), he well knows, &c.' But again this knowledge is not dependent on wealth.

57. θανόντων μέν.] Opposed by toais de (v. 61). The d' of vv. 58, 62, is in both cases quite subordinate. Rauchenstein's explanation is condemned by his separation of ἐνθάδε from θανόντων.

ἀπάλαμνοι.] Solon, Frag. 27 (3) 12, οὐδ ̓ ἔρδειν ἔθ ̓ ὅμως ἔργ ̓ ἀπάλαμνα θέλει. Theogn. v. 281, δειλῷ γάρ τ' ἀπάλαμνα βροτῷ πάρα πόλλ ̓ ἀνελέσθαι | πὰρ ποδός, ἡγεῖσθαί θ ̓ ὡς καλὰ πάντα τιθεῖ. With this passage compare Frag. 106 [95].

59. δικάζει τις.] The Schol. says Pluto is meant, but it might be Minos. The indefinite pronoun is used in solemn reticence, as in Aesch. Εum. 360, σπευδόμεναι δ'

63. δέκονται.] So Wüstemann after one MS. Most read δέρκονται, a mistake suggested by the two preceding lines. Cf. Isth. v. 15.

οὐ χθόνα, κ.τ.λ.] Cf. Isth. i. 48, 49, which suggest that ταράσσοντες πόντιον ὕδωρ means fishing, while Hes. W. and D. 236 makes for navigation generally.

ἀκμᾷ.] • With utmost stress of handiwork.' For év with dat. used adverbially cf. v. 16. For phrase cf. ά. ποδῶν, Isth. VII. (VIII.) 38, α. φρενών, Nem. III. 39.

65. κεινάν.] Owing to lack of sustenance.' Cf. Thuk. 1. 141, § 9.

τιμίοις θεῶν.] Dissen and Don. understand those who are honoured by the gods;' but the gen. cannot be defended except as a partitive. I take the Chthonian deities to be meant, and οἵτινες to refer back to ἐσλοί.
