Brocklebank of Liverpool 1840, trading to India and South America 1840-49; entered Cunard company's service 1851 and commanded 14 different steamers belonging to that fleet in Mediterranean and Atlantic trades; commanded Great Eastern steamer while laying Atlantic telegraph 15 July to 19 Aug. 1865 and 30 June to 19 Sept. 1866; managing director of Eastern telegraph co. 1866 to death; knighted at Windsor castle 10 Nov. 1866; presented with freedom of Dumfries 14 Dec. 1866; F.G.S. 1870. d. 62 Queen's gate, South Kensington 7 May 1893. bur.
