PREFACE

IN the year 1889 the late Dr. Morris did me the honour of inviting me to revise his "Historical Outlines of English Accidence," which, for twenty years, was the best introduction to the elements of English philology, but which required material correction in order to bring it into harmony with the results of the investigations of recent times. Dr. Morris was prevented from doing the revision himself, his time being wholly taken up by his school work, and what little leisure was left to him being devoted to his studies in Pâli; but I was to have the advantage of his immense knowledge and judicious advice. Unfortunately, that celebrated scholar died before I was able to put the revised "Accidence" into his hands, and I cannot too warmly express my thanks to Mr. Bradley, who, in time of need, kindly undertook to supervise my revision.
