FOR forty-two years I have had the great privilege of unfolding and maintaining the great truths of the word of God both by speech and writing, as a clergyman of the English Church. For the future I expect to be restricted chiefly to the second means alone. The obligation to maintain and unfold Christian truth through the press is thus increased; especially since I hold the office of Professor of Moral Theology and Moral Philosophy in the University of Bacon, Newton, and Milton. Attacks have been made and are still in progress on Christianity and on all the foundations of our Christian empire, by three allied systems of error-Ultramontanism, Agnosticism, or Secularism, and the Liberationism, which would banish the name of Christ from the whole world of politics. At such a time, I would earnestly counsel the younger clergy, and the moral instructors of the next generation, lay or clerical, to lay to heart the charge of St Paul, just before his martyrdom, to Timothy, his son and companion in the faith.
