AS CONNECTED WITH THE IMPROVEMENT
OF THE RISING GENERATION.
IN addressing Youth on topics of Improvement, the subjects of Genius and Taste are selected, because they are terms that are frequently used, without having precise and determinate ideas affixed to them. They are in constant recurrence, and for that reason, perhaps, less understood. It is necessary, therefore, to enquire into their nature, to point out their tendency, and shew in what respects they may be found conducive to improvement. Young persons, who have not enjoyed a liberal education, have probably not been made quainted with a System of Rhetoric.---of course, these terms have never been the subject of con. sideration. To such individuals this Introduc tory Essay may be acceptable ; for though nothing new is here' advanced, yet it is to be hoped that what is brought forward, maya lay claim to the praise of accuracy. The province of a pioneer, however humble, is ex. tremely useful; the way is cleared, and laid open for inspection; thus oftentimes, in the military profession, the most important plans are projected and carried into execution.
