While a serious tone has generally been maintained, the author has not thought fit to manifest a melancholy or gloom which he did not really feel. Anything approaching to levity would have been out of place in these memorials of the dead; but even as a walk through a cemetery may legitimm call up many thoughts that are not sad, so, much that is cheerful, or which at all events was intended to be so, has been introduced, wanting which the book would have been monotonous and dull.
