FAILURES FOR THIRTY-FOUR YEARS, 1857 TO 1890 INCLUSIVE. There were 6,074 failures in the United States during the first half of 1891, or 689 more than during the same period in 1890. The total liabilities were $92,416,267, against $65,319,384, showing an increase of $27,096,883. THE FIRE WASTE. ANNUAL PROPERTY LOSSES IN THE UNITED STATES, 1875-'90. The above figures are taken from "The Chronicle" Fire Tables. In 1890 there were 22,412 noteworthy fires in the United States, representing an average property loss of $5,560. The average loss in 1885 was $7,285; in 1886, 86,760 in 1887. $7,330; in 1888, $0,922, and in 1889, $6,692. The principal causes of fires in 1890 are reported as follows: Incendiarism, 2,106; defective flues, 1,239; matches, 691; stoves and stove-pipes, 597; explosions, 1,116; sparks, 819; spontaneous combustion, 286: gas jets. 269: forest and prairie fires. 89: lightning, 270; lamp and lantern accidents. 243: cigars and pipes. 223: machine friction, 112; furnaces, 184: ignition, 196; engines and boilers. 124: tramps. 116; fireworks, 184; ashes and hot coals. 128. The property losses from electric lights and wires aggregated in 1886, $460,259; in 1887, $681,930; in 1888, $1,587,213; in 1889, 85,533,820 in 1890. $1.245.971. The total fire waste of 1891 from Jan. 1 to Dec. 11, inclusive, by fires of $10,000 or over, was $119,270,000. The loss for the year was estimated at $126,655,000, or an average of $347.000 a day. LIVES LOST BY FIRE IN THE UNITED STATES. On November 13, 1890, Secretary Tracy issued an order that until July 4, 1891. the union of the National ensign and the union jack used in the Naval Service should be composed of five rows of seven stars and one row of eight stars, to provide for the addition of the five new States of North and South Dakota, Montana, Washington and Idaho. In the arrangement space was left for the addition of another star to represent Wyoming, which was added on July 4, 1891. June 14, the anniversary of the adoption of the stars and stripes as the National flag, is now celebrated by the Sons of the American Revolution as Flag Day, by a display of the flag, and the society invites the people of the whole country to follow its example.
