4 Adoring saints around him stand,

And thrones and powers before him fall; The God shines gracious through the man,

And sheds sweet glories on them all. 5 Oh! what amazing joys they feel,

While to their golden harps they sing, And sit on every heavenly hill,

And spread the triumph of their King!

HYMN 208, 78. 208

Prayer for Light and Sanctification. af 1 HOLY GHOST! with light divine,

Shine upon this heart of mine;
Chase the shades of night away,

Turn my darkness into day.
2 Holy Ghost! with power divine,

Cleanse this guilty heart of mine;
Long hath sin, without control,

Held dominion o'er my soul.
3 Holy Ghostl with joy divine,

Cheer this saddened heart of mine;
Bid my many woes depart,

Heal my wounded, bleeding heart.
4 Holy Spirit! all-divine,

Dwell within this heart of mine;
Cast down every idol-throne,
Reign supreme--and reign alone.

HYMN 209, C. M. 209

Various Influences desired.
1 TERNAL Spirit!—God of truth!
Kindle a flame of heavenly love,

And feed the pure desire.
mp 2 'Tis thine to soothe the sorr’wing mind,

With guilt and fear oppressed; < 'T is thine to bid the dying live,

And give the weary rest.
3 Subdue the power of every sin,

Whate'er that sin may be ;
That we, in singleness of heart,

May worship only thee.

HYMN 211, L. M.

Prayer for Light and Guidance.
OME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove!

With light and comfort from above;
Be thou our guardian, thou our guide,

O’er every thought and step preside.
2 To us the light of truth display,

And make us know and choose thy way;
Plant holy fear in every heart,

That we from God may ne'er depart.
3 Lead us to holiness—the road

That we must take to dwell with God;
Lead us to Christ, the living way,

Nor let us from his precepts stray.
4 Lead us to God, our final rest,

To be with him for ever blessed ; mf Lead us to heaven, its bliss to share,

And drink our fill of pleasure there.

HYMN 212, C. M. 212

The Sealing of the Spirit.
THY should the children of a king

Go mourning all their days ?
Great Comforter! descend, and bring

Some tokens of thy grace.
2 Dost thou not dwell in all the saints,

And seal the heirs of heaven? mp

When wilt thou banish my complaints,

And show my sins forgiven?
3 Assure my conscience of her part

In the Redeemer's blood;
And bear thy witness with my heart,

That I ain born of God.
4 Thou art the earnest of his love,

The pledge of joys to come;

And thy soft wings, celestial Dove! mf Will safe convey me home.

HYMN 213, L. M. 213

Prayer against grieving the Spirit. of 1 STAY, thou insulted Spirit! stay;

Though I have done thee such despite ;
Cast not a sinner quite away,

Nor take thine everlasting flight.
2 Though I have most unfaithful been

Of all who e'er thy grace received;
Ten thousand times thy goodness seen,

Ten thousand times thy goodness grieved ;3 Yet, Oh! the chief of sinners spare,

In honor of any great High-Priest;
Nor, in thy righteous anger, swear

I shall not see thy people's rest.
4 My weary soul, O God! release,

Uphold me with thy gracious hand;
Guide me into thy perfect peace,
And bring me to the proinised land.

HYMN 214, L. M. 214

The Comforter.
SURE the blest Comforter is nigh;

'T is he sustains my fainting heart;

Else would my hope for ever die,

And every cheering ray depart.
2 Whene'er, to call the Saviour mine,

With ardent wish my heart aspires,
Can it be less than power divine,

That animates these strong desires ?
3 And, when my cheerful hope can say, - 4

I love my God and taste his grace,
Lord! is it not thy blissful ray,

That brings this dawn of sacred peace? 4 Let thy good Spirit in my heart

For ever dwell, O God of love!
And light and heavenly peacę impart,-

Sweet earnest of the joys above.

The Necessity of renewing Grace.

TOW helpless guilty nature lies,

Unconscious of its load !

The heart, unchanged, can never riso
mf To happiness and God.
2 Can aught, beneath a power divine,

The stubborn will subdue ?
'Tis thine, eternal Spirit! thine,

To form the heart anew.
3 'T is thine, the passions to recall,

And upward bid them rise; mf To make the scales of error fall,

From reason's darkened eyes ;-
4 To chase the shades of death away,

And bid the sinner live;
A beam of heaven-a vital ray,

'T is thine alone to give.
5 Oh! change these wretched hearts of ours,

And give them life divine;

Then shall our passions and our powers, mf Almighty Lord! be thine. 216

GREAT Father

of each perfect gift i

With longing eyes, and lifted hands,

Weilock around thy gate.
2 Oh! shed abroad that choicest gift,

Thy Spirit from above,
To cheer our eyes with sacred light,

And fire our hearts with love.
3 Blest Earnest of eternal joy!

Declare our sins forgiven:
And bear, with energy divine,

Our raptured thoughts to heaven.
4 Diffuse, O God! thy copious showers,

That earth its fruit may yield,
And change the barren wilderness,

To Carmel's flowery field.

Sends down his Spirit, from on high,

According to his word.
2 The Spirit, by his heavenly breath,

New life creates within ;.
He quickens sinners from the death

Of trespasses and sin.
3 The things of Christ the Spirit takes,

And to our heart reveals;
Our bodies he his temple makes,

And our redemption seals.
mf 4 Come, Holy Spirit! from above,

With thy celestial fire;
Come, and, with flames of zeal and love,

Our hearts and tongues inspire. 218
