Do not turn away thy face,

Mine 's an urgent, pressing case.
2 Once, a sinner, near despair,

Sought thy mercy seat by prayer;
Mercy heard and set him free, -

Lord! that mercy came to me.
3 Many days have passed since then,

Many changes I have seen;
Yet have been upheld till now;

Who could hold me up but thou ?

4 Thou hast helped in every need my This emboldens me to plead;

After so much mercy past,

Canst thou let me sink at last ? mf 5 No-I must maintain my hold;

'T is thy goodness makes me bold;
I can no denial take,
Since I plead for Jesus' sake.

HYMN 444, L. M.

The Sun of Righteousness.
1
0

SUN of righteousness! arise,

With gentle beams on Zion shine i
Dispel the darkness from our eyes,

And souls awake to life divine.
2 On all around, let grace descend,

Like heavenly dew, or copious showers ;

That we may call our God our friend, mf That we may hail salvation ours. 445

HYMN 445, S. M.

Prayer for a Revival. 1

0 LORD! thy work revive P

In Zion's gloomy hour;

Anđ let our dying graces live, mf By thy restoring power. 2 Oh! let thy chosen few

Awake to earnest prayer;

m

[ocr errors][merged small]

Their solemn vows again renew,

And walk in filial fear.
3 Thy Spirit then will speak,

Through lips of humble clay,
Till hearts of adamant shall break, -

Till rebels shall obey.
4 Now lend thy gracious ear,

Now listen to our cry ;
Oh! come, and bring salvation near ;-

Our souls on thee rely.

HYMN 446, L. M. 446

Weeping over Sinners. af 1 ARISE, my tenderest thoughts ? arise ;

Dissolve in grief, my streaming eyes! And thou, my heart! with anguish feel

Those evils which thou canst not heal. 2 See human nature sunk in shame;

See scandal poured on Jesus' name;
The Father wounded, through the Son,

The world abused,—the soul undone !
3 See the short course of vain delight,

Closing in everlasting night,
In flames that no abatement know,

Though bitter tears for ever flow!
4 My God! I feel the mournful scene,

And yearn with grief o'er dying men ;
While fain my pity would reclaim

Souls that may perish in the flame.
5 But feeble my compassion proves,

And can but weep, where most it loves : mf

Thine own all-saving arm employ,
And turn these drops of grief to joy.

HYMN 447, H. M.

The Jubilee proclaimed.
LOW ye the trumpet!-blow,-

1

Let all the nations know,

To earth's remotest bound,
The year of jubilee is come;
Return, ye ransomed sinners! home.

ЛV%

2 Exalt the Lamb of God,

The sin-atoning Lamb;
Redemption by lis blood,

Through all the world, proclaim:
The year of jubilee is come;

Return, ye ransomed sinners! home.
3 Ye slaves of sin and hell!

Your liberty receive;
And safe in Jesus dwell,

And blest in Jesus live;
The year of jubilee is come;

Return, ye ransomed sinners ! home. mf 4 The gospel trumpet hear,

The news of pard’ning grace:
Ye happy souls ! draw near,

Behold your Saviour's face:
The year of jubilee is come;

Return, ye ransomed sinners! home.
5 Jesus, our great High-Priest,

Has full atonement made:
Ye weary spirits! rest,

Ye mourning souls ! be glad :
The year of jubilee is come;
Return, ye ransomed sinners! home.

HYMN 448, L. M. 448

Hope in Times of Darkness. тр 1

WI
HILE I to grief my soul gave way,

To see the work of God decline,

Methought I heard the Saviour say, mf “Dismiss thy fears, the ark is mine. 2 “Though for a time I hid my face,

Rely upon my love and power ; mf Still wrestle at the throne of grace,

And wait for a reviving hour.
3 " Take down thy long-neglected harp

I've seen thy tears, and heard thy prayer;
The winter season has been sharp,

But spring shall all its wastes repair." 4 Lord! I obey,—my hopes revive;

Come, join with me, ye saints ! and sing, Our foes in vain against us strive,

For God will help and triumph bring."

HYMN 449, L. M.
449

The Vision of dry Bones.
OOK down, O Lord! with pitying eye,

See Adamı's race in ruin lie;
Sin spreads its trophies o'er the ground,

And scatters slaughtered heaps around.
2 And can these dead awake and live?

And can these perished bones revive?
That, mighty God! to thee is known;

That wondrous work is all thine own.
3 Thy ministers are sent in vain,

To prophesy upon the slain,
In vain they call, in vain they cry, -

Till thine almighty aid is nigh.
4 But if thy Spirit deign to breathe,

Life spreads through all the realms of death;
Dry bones obey thy powerful voice,-

They move, they waken, they rejoice.
5 So, when thy trumpet's awful sound

Shall shake the heavens, and rend the ground,
Dead saints shall from their toinbs arise,
And spring to life beyond the skies.

HYMN 450, H. M. 450

Rejoicing in a Revival. f

ZION! tune thy voice,

And raise thy hands on high ;
Tell all the earth thy joys,

And boast salvation nigh;
Cheerful in God,

Arise and shine,

While rays divine

Stream all abroad.
mf 2 He gilds thy mourning face

With beams that cannot fade;
His all-resplendent grace

He pours around thy head;
The nations round

Thy form shall view,

With lustre new,
Divinely crowned.

3 In honor to his name,

Reflect that sacred light;
And loud that grace proclaim,

Which makes thy darkness bright;
Pursue his praise,

Till sovereign love,

In worlds above,
The glory raise.
4 There, on his holy hill,

A brighter sun shall rise,
And, with his radiance, fill

Those fairer, purer skies ;
While, round his throne,

Ten thousand stars,

In nobler spheres,
His influence own.

HYMN 451, 8s and 78. 451

Prayer for a Revival. aft 1

SAY
AVIOUR! visit thy plantation ;

Grant us, Lord! a gracious rain;
All will come to desolation,

Unless thou return again.
2 Keep no longer at a distance ;---

Shine upon us from on high,
Lest, for want of thine assistance,

Every plant should droop and die.
3 Let our mutual love be fervent,

Make us prevalent in prayers ;
Let each one, esteemed thy servant,

Shun the world's enticing snares.
4 Break the tempter's fatal power;

Turn the stony heart to flesh ;

And begin, from this good hour, wf To revive thy work afresh.
