And earth, with all her millions, shout
Hosannas to the Lord.

HYMN 551, 7s and 68.

The State of the Heathen.

FROM Greenland's icy mountains,

From India's coral strand,
Where Afric's sunny fountains
Roll down their golden sand;
From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.
2 What though the spicy breezes
Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle,-
Though every prospect pleases,
And only man is vile?-
In vain, with lavish kindness,
The gifts of God are strown;
The heathen, in his blindness,

Bows down to wood and stone.
8 Shall we, whose souls are lighted
With wisdom from on high,-
Shall we, to men benighted,
The lamp of life deny?
Salvation! O Salvation!-
The joyful sound proclain,
Till earth's remotest nation
Has learned Messiah's name.

4 Waft-waft, ye winds! his story,
And you, ye waters! roll,-
Till, like a sea of glory,

[blocks in formation]

It spreads from pole to pole;
Till, o'er our ransomed nature,
The Lamb for sinners slain,
Redeemer, King, Creator,
In bliss returns to reign.

HYMN 552, L. M.

Zion encouraged.

ZION! awake, thy strength renew,
Put on thy robes of beauteous hue;
And let th' admiring world behold
The King's fair daughter clothed in gold.

2 Church of our God! arise and shine,
Bright with the beams of truth divine:
Then shall thy radiance stream afar,
Wide as the heathen nations are.

3 Gentiles and kings thy light shall view;
All shall admire and love thee too;-
Shall come, like clouds across the sky,
Or doves that to their windows fly.

HYMN 553, C. M.

Prayer for Missionaries.

1 REAT God! the nations of the earth
Are by creation thine;

And in thy works, from nature's birth,
Thy radiant glories shine.

2 But, Lord! thy greater love hath sent
Thy gospel to our race;
Unveiling thy divine intent

Of rich redeeming grace.

3 Soon may these gracious tidings roll
The spacious earth around,
Till every tribe and every soul
Shall hear the joyful sound.

4 Then, to her sable sons conveyed,
Shall Afric learn thy word,

And vassals, long-enslaved, become
The freemen of the Lord.

5 When shall the scattered wanderers meet,
That now in darkness rove,

And, gathered round Immanuel's feet,
Sing of his saving love?

6 O Lord! each faithful effort own,
To spread the gospel rays;

554

And rear, on sin's demolished throne,
The temples of thy praise.

HYMN 554, H. M.

Prophecy fulfilled.

mf 1 ALL hail! incarnate God!

The wondrous things foretold

Of thee, in sacred writ,

With joy our eyes behold;

Still doth thine arm new trophies wear,
And monuments of glory rear.

2 Oh! haste, victorious Prince!
That glorious happy day,
When souls, like drops of dew,
Shall own thy gentle sway:
Oh! may it bless our longing eyes,
And bear our shouts beyond the skies.

3 All hail! triumphant Lord!

Eternal be thy reign;

Behold the nations wait

To wear thy gentle chain :

When earth and time are known no more,
Thy throne shall stand for ever sure.

HYMN 555, L. M.

Triumph of the Gospel.

ARM of the Lord! awake, awake!

Put on thy strength, the nations shake, And let the world, adoring, see

Triumphs of mercy wrought by thee.

2 Say to the heathen, from thy throne,-
"I am Jehovah-God alone!"

Thy voice their idols shall confound,
And cast their altars to the ground.

mf 8 Almighty God! thy grace proclaim,
In every land of every name;.

Let Zion's time of favor come;

Oh! bring the tribes of Israel home.

f" 4 Arm of the Lord! awake, awake!
Put on thy strength, the nations shake;
Let hostile powers before thee fall,
And crown the Saviour-Lord of all.

HYMN 556, 8s, 7s and 4.

The Day Spring.

HRISTIAN! see! the orient morning
Breaks along the heathen sky;
Lo! th' expected day is dawning-
Glorious day-spring from on high:
Hallelujah!-

Hail the day-spring from on high!

mf 2 Heathen at the sight are singing;
Morning wakes the tuneful lays;
Precious offerings they are bringing-
First-fruits of more perfect praise:
Hallelujah!-

f"

Hail the day-spring from on high!
3 Zion's Sun!-salvation beaming,-
Gilding now the radiant hills,—
Rise and shine, till, brighter gleaming,
All the world thy glory fills:
Hallelujah!—

Hail the day-spring from on high!
4 Lord of every tribe and nation!
Spread thy truth from pole to pole;
Spread the light of thy salvation,
Till it shine on every soul:
Hallelujah!-

To wait for thine appointed hour;

The triumphs of thy conquering power.

The coming Reign of Christ.

ASCEND thy throne, almighty King!
And spread thy glories all abroad;

mp

I SAV

Let thine own arm salvation bring,
And be thou known the gracious God.
2 Let millions bow before thy seat,-
Let humble mourners seek thy face;
Bring daring rebels to thy feet,

Subdued by thy victorious grace.
mf 3 Oh! let the kingdoms of the world
Become the kingdoms of the Lord;
Let saints and angels praise thy name,-
Be thou through heaven and earth adored.

HYMN 559, 7s and 6s.

The final Victory of Christ.

1 WHEN shall the voice of singing
Flow joyfully along?

When hill and valley, ringing

With one triumphant song,
Proclaim the contest ended,
And him, who once was slain,
Again to earth descended,
In righteousness to reign.

2 Then, from the craggy mountains,
The sacred shout shall fly;
And shady vales and fountains
Shall echo the reply:

560

High tower and lowly dwelling
Shall send the chorus round,
All hallelujah swelling

In one eternal sound.

HYMN 560, C. M.

The New Creation.

mf 1 SPIRIT of power and might! behold

mp

A world by sin destroyed:

Creator Spirit!-as of old,

Move on the formless void.

2 Give thou the word;-that healing sound
Shall quell the deadly strife;
And earth again, like Eden crowned,
Produce the tree of life.

3 If sang the morning stars for joy,
When nature rose to view,
