DURING the first five days of May the weather continued much the same as it had been towards the end of April. The temperature rather declined, and the hygrometer indicated a very dry atmosphere. On the 6th it became showery, and the rest of the month was exceedingly wet, there being only seven dry days out of 26. The mean temperature is a degree lower than that of the corresponding month last year, and the quantity of rain is greater than any ny one month during the last nine years. The mean of the daily extremes coincides exactly with the mean temperature of 10 morning and evening. On the 10th, 16th, and 17th, there was a good deal of thunder, accompanied with heavy rain; but on none of these days did the temperature exceed 60. Altogether, the month furnishes another remarkable instance of the changeable nature of our climate, and a proof how little can be predicted with certainty respecting the state of the weather. It has been said, that long continued droughts generally begin in March or April, and at one time there was every appearance of the present being a dry season. It is now probable, however, that the quantity of rain will at least amount to the general average, as nearly one-fourth of that quantity has fallen in the course of the month of May. At present too, there is every reason to fear, that there will be a considerable reduction in the mean temperature of the Summer months, as compared with those of 1818 and 1819. MAY 1820.
