But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the Gospel, a I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

VER. 16.

Εἰδότες ὅτι οὐ δικαιοῦται ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ἔργων νόμου, ἐὰν μὴ διὰ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ· καὶ ἡμεῖς εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐπιστεύσαμεν, ἵνα δικαιωθῶμεν ἐκ πίστεως Χριστοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων νόμου διότι οὐ δικαιωθήσεται ἐξ ἔργων νόμου πᾶσα σάρξ.

VER. 17.

Εἰ δὲ ζητοῦντες δικαιωθῆναι ἐν Χριστῷ, εὑρέθημεν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἁμάρτωλοι, ἄρα Χριστὸς ἁμαρτίας διάκονος ; Μὴ γένοιτο.

Οὐκ ἀθετῶ τὴν χάριν τοῦ Θεοῦ· εἰ γὰρ διὰ νόμου δικαιοσύνη, ἄρα Χριστὸς δωρεὰν ἀπέθανεν.

I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

CHAP. III. VER. 1.

Ω ἀνόητοι Γαλάται, τίς ὑμᾶς ἐβάσκανε τῇ ἀληθείᾳ μὴ πείθεσθαι, οἷς κατ ̓ ὀφε θαλμοὺς Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς προεγράφη, ἐν ὑμῖν ἐσταυρωμένος ;

Ο foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?

Τοῦτο μόνον θέλω μαθεῖν ἀφ ̓ ὑμῶν, Εξ ἔργων, νόμου τὸ Πνεῦμα ἐλάβετε, ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως;

This only would I learn of you, a Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith ?

righteousness of faith. For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: Because the law work

eth wrath: for where no law is, there faith, that it might be by grace: to is no transgression. Therefore it is of the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all. (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were, Rom. iv. 11-17. VER. 8.

VER. 3. Οὕτως ἀνόητοί ἐστε ; ἐναρξάμενοι πνεύματι, νῦν σαρκὶ ἐπιτελεῖσθε ;

Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

• Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham,

Ωστε οἱ ἐκ πίστεως, εὐλογοῦνται σὺν τῷ πιστῷ Αβραάμ.

VER. 16.

Τῷ δὲ ̓Αβραὰμ ἐῤῥήθησαν αἱ ἐπαγγε λίαι, καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ. Οὐ λέγει Καὶ τοῖς σπέρμασιν, ὡς ἐπὶ πολλῶν' ἀλλ ̓ ὡς ἐφ ̓ ἑνός· Καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου, ὅς ἐστι Χριστός.

VER. 17.

Τοῦτο δὲ λέγω, διαθήκην προκεκυρω μένην ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς Χριστὸν, ὁ μετὰ ἔτη τετρακόσια καὶ τριάκοντα γεγονὼς νόμος οὐκ ἀκυροῖ, εἰς τὸ καταργῆσαι τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν.

And this I say, 3 that the covenant, Christ, b the law, which was four hun that was confirmed before of God in annul, that it should make the promise dred and thirty years after, cannot disof none effect.

Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty end of the four hundred and thirty years. And it came to pass at the pro-years, even the self same day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt, Exod. xii. 40, 41.

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the mise of the Spirit through faith.

Wherefore then serveth the law? a It was added because of transgressions, btill the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

VER. 24.

Ωστε ὁ νόμος παιδαγωγὸς ἡμῶν γέγονεν εἰς Χριστὸν, ἵνα ἐκ πίστεως δικαιωθῶμεν·

Wherefore a the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

By the law was the knowledge of sin, Rom. iii. 20. What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death, vii. 7—10. Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ, Col. ii. 17. Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience, Heb. ix. 9.

VER. 25.

Εἰ δὲ ὑμεῖς Χριστοῦ, ἄρα τοῦ ̓Αβραὰμ σπέρμα ἐστὶ, καὶ κατ ̓ ἐπαγγελίαν κληρο vóμo.

And if ye be a Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect, Rom. iv. 13, 14.
