E solcò il molle limo ad alvei altissimi,
Facil, pria del dir Dio, sia terra l'arida;
Or dentro a queste sponde solo corrono
Fiumi e perenne la lor piena traggono.
La region secca, terra; ed il gran gurgite
Dell'acque insieme accolte ei disse mari.
- E vide ch' era buono: e terra metta,
Disse, erba verde e che produca seme,
Ed alberi fruttiferi in sua specie
Ch'abbian lor seme in se sopra la terra.
Ei disse appena e la deserta terra
Fino allor nuda, squallida, inadorna
Tenere erbe spuntò la cui verzura
Tutta vesti sua faccia in vago ammanto,
Quindi erbe d' ogni fronda che improvvise
Fioriro aprendo lor color svariati,
E il seno ornò odorato: a questi appresso
Gettò la vite fitti raspi, e a terra
Strisciò la zucca, in campo lor schierate
Le canne alzarsi, e l'umile arboscello
E il cespo a crin ricciuto intorto: alfine
Quali in danza s'alzar superbe piante,
Spiegar lor braccia ricche in frutta o fiori
O gemme; a selve coronarsi i monti,
Le valli a piote; furon cigli ai fonti
E prode lungo i fiumi; or terra apparve
Simile al cicl degno de' numi ostello
A vagar con diletto, o stare al rezzo
Di sue sacre ombre: non ancor piovuto
Avea su terra Iddio, nè niun cultore
V'era, pur dalla terra uscìa vapore
Rugiadoso, e irrigava il suolo ed ogni
Plant of the field; which, ere it was in the earth,
God made, and every herb, before it grew
On the green stem: God saw that it was good:
So even and morn recorded the third day.
Again the Almighty spake: Let there be lights High in the expanse of heaven, to divide
The day from night; and let them be for signs,
For seasons, and for days, and circling years;
And let them be for lights, as I ordain
Their office in the firmament of heaven,
To give light on the earth; and it was so.
And God made two great lights, great for their use
To man, the greater to have by day,
The less by night, altern; and made the stars,
And set them in the firmament of heaven
To illuminate the earth, and rule the day
In their vicissitude, and rule the night,
And light from darkness to divide.
Surveying his great work, that it was good:
For of celestial bodies first the sun
A mighty sphere he fram'd, unlightsome first,
Though of ethereal mould: then form'd the moon
Globose, and every magnitude of stars,
And sow'd with stars the heaven, thick as a field:
Of light by far the greater part be took,
Transplanted from her cloudy shrine; and plae'd
In the sun's orb, made porous to receive
And drink the liquid light; firm to retain
Her gather'd beams, great palace now of light.
Hither, as to their fountain, other stars
Repairing, in their golden urns draw light,
And hence the morning-planet gilds her horns;

« Disse l'eccelso ancor: là sian splendori
Alti del ciel nel vano il di a partire
Da notte; e sien campati a certi segni
Per stagioni e per di e volubili anni;
E lampe ardenti sien, tale io prescrivo
L'officio lor del ciel nel firmamento,
Ad allumar la terra, e sì fu fatto.
E Dio fe' due grandi astri, a prò dell' uomo
Alternanti, a raggiar nel dì il maggiore,
Nella notte il minore, e feo le stelle
E posele del ciel nel firmamento
Ad illustrar la terra e addurre il giorno
Nelle vicende loro e addur la notte,
E partir luce da tenébra. Iddio
Mirando all' opra sua, la vide buona:
Chè de' celesti corpi primo il sole
Ei formò, grande sfera, opaca in prima
Benchè di tempra eterea, poi la luna
Rotonda, e gli astri di svariata mole,
E il ciel qual campo seminò di stelle
Folto di luce tolse ingente piena
Presa dal padiglion di nube, e in l'orbe
Del sol locolla, che a sorbir poroso
La luce liquida e a serbar tenace
Suoi raggi uniti, è gran magion di luce.
Qui, come a fonte ristorando gli astri
Lor urne aurate empion di luce, e quinci
Sue corna indora il mattutin pianeta;
By tincture or reflection they augment
Their small peculiar, though from human sight
So far remote, with diminution seen.
First in his east the glorious lamp was seen,
Regent of day! and all the horizon round
Invested with bright rays, jocund to run
His longitude through heaven's high road; the grey
Dawn and the Pleiades before him dane'd,
Shedding sweet influence: less bright the moon,
But opposite in levell'd west was set,
His mirror, with full face borrowing her light
From him; for other light she needed none
In that aspect, and still that distance keeps
Till night; then in the east her turn she shines
Revolv'd on heaven's great axle, and her reign
With thousand lesser lights dividual holds,
With thousand thousand stars, that then appear'd
Spangling the hemisphere: then first adorn'd
With their bright luminaries that set and rose,
Glad evening and glad morn crown'd the fourth day.
And God said: Let the waters generate
Reptile with spawn abundant, living soul,
And let fowl fly above the earth, with wings
Display'd on the open firmament of heaven.
And God created the great whales, and each
Soul living, each that crept, which plenteously
The waters generated by their kind;
And every bird of wing after his kind;
And saw that it was good, and bless'd them, saying,
Be fruitful, multiply, and in the seas,
And lakes, and running streams, the waters fill;
And let the fowl be multiplied on the earth.
Con rai riflessi o retti accrescon elli
La propria parvità, benchè si lungi
Dal guardo umano appaiano minuti.
Primo appari in oriente il foco augusto
Rettor del di! che l'orizzonte intorno
Vestendo d'almi rai, prendea giulivo
Per l'alte vie del cielo il suo viaggio;
L'aurora albiccia innanzi a luí e le Pleiadi
Fondean danzando dolci influssi, e luna
Men chiara a fronte stea all' opposto occaso
Qual suo specchio, chiedente a pieno volto
Da lui sua luce onde è saziata appieno
In quel guardarsi, e in tal distanza incede
Fino a notte; in oriente poi ritorna
Del ciel girata sul grand' asse, e splende
Con mille astri minor diviso il regno,
Con mille faci e mille, che appariro
Screziando l'emisfero: così adorni
Di lor facelle orienti e occidue, lieti
Sera e mattin compiero il quarto giorno.
E disse Dio: Producan l'acque rettili
Con abbondevol seme anime vive.
E augelli volin con spiegati vanni
Sopra la terra e per l'aperto cielo.
E Dio creò tragrandi ceti, ed ogni
Spirto vivo e guizzante, cui in gran copia
Produsser l'acque nelle proprie specie,
Ed ogni augel che in propria specie impenni.
Buono lo vide e il benedisse Iddio;
Crescete or voi, moltiplicate, ci disse,
Ne' mari e laghi e fiumi l'acque empite,
E su terra moltiplichin gli augelli.
