À PROPOS TO A PROPOSAL.

FRANK (just accepted).-"Love thee, dearest? Ay, and when time shall have furrowed these youthful cheeks and dimmed the lustre of eyes which feed only on thy beauty, when age shall have threaded silver amidst these glossy locks and bowed the figure erstwhile straight as famed Apollo's dart-still-STILL will I love thee!" LAURA (hastily).-"Oh, Frank, I hope not! Think how old you will be!"

GARDENING NOTES. ALWAYS train your Standard roses up Telegraph wires.

In the case of all cuttings be sure to paste the leaves down securely.

In sowing parsley, be very careful to scatter but little seed, as it will certainly not come up parsley unless it is (s)parsely sown.

If you wish to keep your "rakes" in good order, let them "hoe" nothing; see they are stretched on their "beds" betimes; and keep them away from "plants" of all kinds.

Remember that "dealing" with a garden, "spades" are always trumps.

Use a warming-pan for your "hotbeds" in preference to blankets; but never "tuck in " the cucumbers until they are fully grown.

If you find your vines "shooting" too much, take care they are loaded with "grape."

AN URBAN DELUSION.

Jones knew a thing too much for most people. "Nice bunch o' water-creeses, just fresh in," said his greengrocer. "Oh, ah!" said the knowing Jones; "fresh-oh, yes! after being brought all the way from the country! Not for me, thankee!" For the fact was that the knowing Jones was just off for a day or two in the country himself.

[graphic][subsumed]

But it so happened that that same bunch of water-cress went down by the same train as Jones did, and alighted at the same rural station. "Ha!" said Jones, in a stroll down the country lanes, now, here comes a fellow with a real fresh country bunch of water-cresses; I will buy them and take them home to town with me the day after to-morrow. That's the way to get the real fresh article!"

GOOD NEWS FOR THE OPHTHALMIC HOSPITAL.-'Igh water may be had at London Bridge every day next year.

IT is said to be difficult to foretell the death of anything, yet the almanacs tell us that on a certain date "Fire Insurances will expire.

JANUARY AND FEBRUARY. ON the 1st of January the good little boys of the Stock Exchange have a holiday, probably taken in order to allow them time to renew their dog licences. Those gentlemen who are not the proprietors of dogs usually spend the day by perusing such books as Paley's "Evidences of Christianity," or Young's "Night Thoughts." Dark lines round their eyes indicative of deep study may be observed on the 2nd of January. Colds and coughs are sure to be prevalent. Even Irish patriots and Socialist leaders may be seen in their bed-rooms, rubbing tallow candles on their noses.

"February brings the rain," Milton or somebody else remarks. Inasmuch as, in this brutal climate of ours, every other month does the same, this statement does not worry us. The semi-melted bits of ice during this month afford the pickpockets most excellent opportunities of slipping and catching hold of obese old gentlemen's watch-chains, to save themselves from nasty falls.
