GENESIS, XXVI.
B. C. 1867.

Jacob and Esau born. sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, 14 And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,

15 Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:

16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve m princes according to their nations.

17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.

18 And they dwelt from n Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he 2 died in the presence of all his brethren.

19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begat Isaac:

22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to inquire s of the LORD.

23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve t the younger.

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; u and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning v hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in w tents.

28 And Isaac loved Esau, because 3 he did eat of his venison: z but Rebekah loved Jacob.

CHAPTER XXVI.

1 Isaac goeth to Gerar: 2 God blesseth him: 26 Abimelech's covenant.

AND there was a famine in the

land, besides the first famine a that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech b king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which 1 shall tell thee of:

3 Sojourn c in this land and I will be with thee, d and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, 1 will give all e these countries, and I will perform the oath f which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed g shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, h and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

6 ¶ And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:

7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, i She is my sister: for he feared k to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.

8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.

9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.

CHAPTER XXVII. 1 Isaac sends Esau for venison. 6 Jacob instructed by Rebekah, obtains the blessing.

AND it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, a so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: And he said unto him, Behold, here am I.

2 And he said, Behold, now I am old, I know not b the day of my

3 Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;

4 And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may cat; that my soul c may bless thee before I die.

5 And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.

6 And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying,

26 And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.

27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed q him, and said, See, r the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed: s

28 Therefore God give thee oft the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:

29 Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons u bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, v and blessed be he that blesseth thee.

30 And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.

31 And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me.

32 And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau.

33 And Isaac 4trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath 5 taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before w thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed.

5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padan-aram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.

6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed fJacob, and sent him away to Padan-aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that, as he blessed him, he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;

11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.

12 And he i dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and, k behold, the angels of God ascending and descending on it. 13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it: and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

14 And thy seed m shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt 6 spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south and in thee and in thy seed n shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
