I. On Catechism and Christian Doctrine.

RELIGIOUS READING BOOKS by Canon WENHAM.

No. I. A FIRST READING BOOK FOR YOUNG CHILDREN.

100.

No. II. EASY EXPLANATION OF THE GREAT TRUTHS OF RELIGION AND OF THE COMMANDMENTS. IS.

No. III. EXPLANATION OF SOME OF THE MORE DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE CATECHISM. Is. 6d.

The plan of the Series is to make religious knowledge more casy and interesting to children:

1. By making a great point of keeping close to the phraseology and manner of speaking with which they are familiar.

2. By keeping out of sight hard and theological terms until they have first become familiar with the things signified by such terms.

3. By introducing as many references as possible to the external observances and duties of Religion, so that they may recognise them in daily life.

4. By illustrating doctrine by the Old Testament History and the Miracles, Parables, Actions, and Illustrations of our Lord.

For Pupil Teachers or Advanced Classes.

II. Sacred History.

SACRED HISTORY READING BOOK FOR SCHOOL CLASSES. By Canon WENHAM. Is. 6d.

"A fairly easy and consecutive narrative of Sacred History in the language, as far as may be, of the Scripture itself. The work has been excellently done; enough of the sacred text is embodied to make the reading-lesson vivid and interesting, and Cathon.c schools can now supply themselves with a class reading-book of Sacred History as of great literary merit as the best of the now numerous 'Readers' on the 'subjects' of history, geography, science, and art."-Dublin Review.

'The speciality of the 'Sacred History Reading Book' is that it keeps as close as possible to the words of Holy Scripture. This gives a picturesque freshness to the narrative wholly wanting in most of the ordinary summaries, besides conveying a far better knowledge of the original. A little book like the one before us gives just

that knowledge of the sacred text that is desirable for the young."-Month.

OLD TESTAMENT READINGS. 4s. 6d.

By Canon WENHAM.

The “Readings” are divided into four historical periods :

1. The Patriarchs; or the Old Testament history from the beginning to the birth of Moses, i.e. from B.C. 4004 to B.C. 1571, a period of 2433 years.

2. The Israelites; or history of God's chosen people from the birth of Moses to the end of the Judges, i.e. from B.C. 1571 to B.C. 1075, a period of 496 years. 3. The Kings; or history of the Israelites from the establishment of the kingdom to its end, from B.C. 1075 to B.C. 606, a period of 469 years.

4. The Prophets; or history of the Jews from B.C. 606 to the birth of Christ, including a particular account of the prophetic writings.

PARTS I. and II. can be purchased separately from the two last, price 25.;
PARTS III. and IV., price 3s.

'Every Catholic must feel himself indebted to Canon Wenham for the 'Readings.' Indeed, the more we see of them the more are we convinced that the work is calculated to win its way into every Catholic family where the English language is spoken, and to become the vade mecum of every priest, paterfamilias, student, and teacher.”Dublin Review, First Notice.

"It has already found its way into several of our upper schools, and will doubtless before long become a general class-book. We must sincerely thank Canon Wenham for his excellently well-arranged and well-digested Index. Its insertion has considerably enhanced the value and excellence of the Readings.'"--Dublin Review, Second Notice.

"This very excellent work has been most carefully arranged with chronological tables, explanatory notes, and maps. The sacred narrative is related as much as possible in the words of Holy Writ, conveyed in the most interesting manner, and illustrated by very instructive notes and explanations. It will be found admirably

well adapted to convey a clear knowledge of Bible history in a most attractive form.”Weekly Register.

We thank Canon Wenham for the very useful manual of Scripture Readings which he has prepared for our Catholic children. Both the plan and carrying out have met with universal approbation.”—Universe.

LIEBIG'S EXTRACT OF MEAT AND MALT WINE.

(COLEMAN'S)

A DELICIOUS BEVERAGE AND TONIC.

Made from Port Wine, Liebig's Extract of Meat, and Extract of Malt, Nutritious, Strengthening, Stimulating, Flesh-forming, and Healthrestoring; suitable for the robust in health as well as the Invalid. Strongly recommended by the Medical Faculty. An immediate

benefit is experienced after taking it; the frame is invigorated, and no ill-effects follow.

[blocks in formation]

SIR, A short time since I was induced by the novelty of the title to send for a bottle of your Liebig's Extract of Meat and Malt Wine. I was perfectly acquainted with the value of Extractum Čarnis, and not quite a stranger to the invigorating and fortifying properties of Malt Wine, and therefore felt a natural curiosity to test them combined.

Men who work hard, as I do, not muscular hard work, but that which is quite as exhausting, viz., brain work, very often experience the need of, and have sometimes an almost irresistible craving for, a "pick-me-up;" and very often the panacea for a time of lassitude, and that state of mind which renders work irksome, is alchoholic stimulants, the use of which must, sooner or later, end disastrously.

The man who can furnish a remedy, ⚫ sure, certain, and harmless, for the lassitude which follows constant brain work is a benefactor of his species, and may be said to have added many years of usefulness to the lives of useful men.

Your extract is a success, and, when more generally known, will be used by all toilers of the mind.

Yours faithfully, O. D. RAY. Norwich, Feb. 23rd, 1881.

Granspound, February 25th, 1881. MRS. COULSON thanks Mr. Coleman for the book and stamps, and she has no doubt but that "the Tonic" is a good one. Mrs. C. encloses twelve stamps for basket.

LIEBIG'S EXTRACT OF MEAT AND

MALT WINE. (COLEMAN'S).

Queen's Crescent, Haverstock Hill,

London, March 5th, 1881. DEAR SIR,-Some time since, being greatly fatigued with overwork, and long hours at business, my health (being naturally delicate) became very indifferent. I lost all energy, strength, and appetite, and was so weak as to be scarcely able to walk.

As you are aware, I sent for a dozen of your extract of Meat and Malt Wine, which, in a few days, pulled me up marvellously. Three or four glasses of it daily have quite altered and restored me to better health than ever, "without the assistance of a doctor."

I am now giving it to my son, twelve years of age, whom we have always thought consumptive, and, from a puny, ailing boy, he seems to be fast growing into a strong, healthy lad.

Enclosed you have cheque. Please send me two dozen of the "Extract." With thanks for your prompt attention to my last, I am, sir, yours truly,

GEORGE A. TYLER.

Vicarage, Kingsbridge, Devon. Jan. 25th, 1881. DEAR SIR,-We are ten miles from the railway, and have been snowed up, consequently the wine has only just arrived. I enclose a cheque for £2 11s 6d. I like the wine and will recommend it. Yours faithfully, A. N. HINGSTON.
