PSALMANAZAR (George) = N. F. B. de Rodes. Il est nécessaire, en traitant de l'île de Formose, de parler de cet imposteur pour mettre en garde ceux qui pourraient considérer comme un ouvrage sérieux sa description de ce pays lointain. Boucher de la Richarderie, dans sa Bibliothèque universelle des voyages, V, pp. 289/291, dont la valeur a été autrefois grandement surfaite, n'a cité qu'un seul ouvrage sur Formose: celui de Psalmanazar qui fournit au naif bibliographe le sujet d'un long article sur Formose. Le repentir de Psalmanazar est aussi célèbre que son imposture; «il avait composé, pour un traité de géographie qui fut publié en 1747 (Complete System of Geography, 1747, ii, p. 251), l'article Formose uniquement afin d'avoir occasion de rétablir la vérité sur ce qui concernait cette île. >>
