of exciting impatience and difguft in another part of the congregation, whofe favourable attention it is equally important to conciliate and fecure. On thefe grounds the Writer has not paid that minute attention to the Phrafeology of his Sermons, which the fuppofed Canon of compofition, if rigidly enforced, would require. Where a word or a phrafe, not ftrictly level to the loweft capacity, could not have been omitted or changed, without evident injury to the sense or force of a paffage, he has fuffered it to remain. He trufts, however, that fuch inftances will be found to be rare; and that few places will occur, which the unlearned cannot fufficiently understand.

As to the Doctrines which characterize this volume, the Writer in a former publication has given a pledge of what may be expected. The fame leading Doctrines of the Gofpel, which he before attempted to elucidate, are thofe, which in his present work he aims to enforce and diffeminate. He then fully believed them to be the Doc

trines of the Bible and of the Church of England; and he has fince found no reato alter his opinion.

It only remains for him to express his earnest wishes, that the Divine Bleffing may attend this humble endeavour, and make it inftrumental in glorifying GOD, and faving fouls, through Jefus Christ our Lord!
