I subjoin the conclusion.

Baleus Prolocutor.

Lete it not greve you, in thys worlde to be tempted,
Consyderynge your lorde and your hygh byshopp Jesus
Was here without synne in every purpose proved
In all our weaknesse to helpe and socour us;
Farthermore to beare with our fragylyte thus.
He is unworthye of hym to be a member,
That wyll not with hym some persecucyon suffer,

The lyfe of man is a profe in hard temptacyon
As Job doth report, and Paul confirmeth the same,
Busye is the devyll, and laboureth his dampnatyon,
Yet have no despayre for Christ hath gote the game,
Now is it easy by a cruelnesse to tame,

For Christes vyctorye is theirs that do believe,

Where say the rake ronynge the devyll can nere greve
Resyst, sayth Peter, resyst that roaringe lyon,
Not with your fastynges Christe never taught ye so;
But with a stronge fayth withstande hys false suggestyon,
And with the Scriptures upon him ever go;

Then shall be no harme be able you to do.
Now may ye beholde ye have Christ on your syde,
So longe as ye have hys veryte for your gyde.

What enemyes are they that from the people wyll have The Scriptures of God whych are the myghty weapon, That Christ left them here their sowles from hell to save, And threw their head lordes into the devyls domynyon, If they be no devyls I say there are devyls non.

They brynge in fastynge, but they leave out Scripture est, Chalke they geve for gold, soch fryndes are they to the

Lete non report us that here we condemne fastynge,
For it is not true, we are of no soch mynde;
But thys we covete, that ye do take the thynge
For a frute of fayth as it is done in kynde,
And onlye Gods worde to subdue the cruell fynde.
Folowe Christ alone, for he is the true Sheparde,
The voyce of Straungers do never more regarde.

They who know Mr. Douce are well aware, that the notes which he thinks proper to prefix to his books, constitute no immaterial part of their value. I take the liberty of transcribing the note which appears at the beginning of this Tract.

"Bale, in the list of his own works, mentions the Baptism and Temptation, and also the Temp tation separately, beginning as this does.

I suspect that this copy has originally followed some edition that commenced with the Baptism which is alluded to in the second line of this piece, as it begins with signature D.

Ames seems to speak of this interlude as separate, perhaps from not having observed the signatures, if this was his copy, which is not improbable.

Mr. Herbert, in his republication of Ames, p. 1548, likewise mentions this piece, but from his description of the compartment in the title, and from his calling it an octavo, as indeed Ames had done, it should seem that he must have seen another copy.

[blocks in formation]

Quere? if the enterlude of John the Baptist preaching in the Wilderness, contains the Baptism above alluded to. See Herbert, p. 1548."

The Editor and Proprietors of the New Cyclopædia embrace with pleasure the earliest opportunity of announcing the period, when, without unforeseen and unavoidable interruptions, their great undertaking will be accomplished. They have published fifteen Parts during the last two years; and in consequence of measures, lately adopted, they trust that they shall be able to publish eight Parts in each succeeding year. Of the seventy-two Parts which as they have now reason to believe, the Cyclopædia will comprehend, forty-six are already before the Public; and the remaining twenty-six will, according to this arrangement, be completed in little more than three years.

Although it is evidently the interest of the Proprietors that the publication should be brought to a conclusion as speedily as possible, yet they are and have been, at all times, willing to forego their own immediate advantage iu order to ensure, to the utmost of their power, the perfec-prietors to have fine Copies taken of them for the Use of ion of a work, which may truly be denominated NATIONAL; and on which they have already expended nearly wo hundred thousand pounds.

At the commencement of an undertaking of such magmitude, it was impossible to make an accurate estimate of the number of Plates which would be required; the por ion, therefore, which should be given in each Fart, was determined by what could be afforded at the time; and it vas increased gratuitously during the interval when paper was reduced in price. The unusual proportion of original articles, requiring illustrative engravings, which has been Furnished by men of eminence in various branches of cience has, however, obliged the Proprietors to trespass on Their Subscribers by a small charge for an increased numper of Plates; but they have in no instance made any deuction from the number which they originally gave with ach Part; double, or folding Plates, being always reckond as two single ones. They beg leave further to observe, hat the additional Plates (published in two or three searate Parts) augment in a very considerable degree the alue and utility of the work; and they are persuaded that he purchasers will think themselves amply compensated or the additional expense to which they are thus subjected. The coloured Impressions will be finished from the Copies in a new and superior manner, rendering them equal to fine and highly-finished Paintings. The grandeur and interest of this portion of the Work can scarcely be too highly estimated, as none but the most valuable Pictures of each Master will be copied.
