Catechismus Lutheri Lingva Svecico-Americana. Lutheri Catechismus, Ofwersatt pa American-Virginiske Spraket. With the rare map and engraved half title.

Small 8vo, full morocco, gilt, gilt edges. Stockholm, Tryckt vthi thet af Kong Maytt privileg. Burchardi Tryckeri af J. J. Genath, f. Anno, 1696.

Collation: Engraved Title; Rubricated Title; Unnumbered Pages, 14; Map of Nova Suecia, pages 1-132; Vocabularium Barbaro-Virgineorum, pages 133-160.

This excessively rare translation of Luther's Catechism into the language of the Virginia Indians (Mohicans) is due to the Swedish Missionary, John Campanius, father of the first Swedish historian of New-Sweden, Theo'd Campanius, who drew the map for this work. It has been erroneously attributed to Acrelius, but on page 4 of the preface it says that it was composed by Joh: Campanius, at first Minister at Frösthult, and from 1642-49 Minister of the Gospel in the Swedish Colonies in America, where he translated the Catechism into the language used in that country. Acrelius says that the book was printed at the Royal expense expressly for the conversion of the American heathen, and that 500 copies were sent to New-Sweden. This accounts for its great rarity, as only a small number must have remained in Sweden.
