ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT.

Illumination. Horae Beatae Mariae Virginis cum Calendario. A Magnificent illuminated Manuscript on 322 pp. of Vellum 61/2x41/2 inches. Ornamented with three full-page miniatures beautifully painted, and 26 highly artistic borders in colors and burnished gold, exhibiting flowers, fruit, animals, human and grotesque figures; 194 Ornamental initials in colors and burnished gold, 21 of which contain small but beautiful miniatures, and hundreds of rubrications. Beautifully written in large letters, about 1430.

8vo, full morocco, gilt back and sides, red levant double, with broad
dentelle borders, watered silk fly leaves, gilt tooled edges, gilt clasp,
in morocco case.
Circa., 1430

A most desirable specimen in fine condition. It is seldom that we find a manuscript with so many small initial letters with miniatures. They depict incidents in the life of Christ, St. George slaying the Dragon, Medieval Knights in Armour, Bishops in full ceremonials. One of the full-page miniatures is exceedingly curious. It might be described as an example of the divine heraldry—the coat-of-arms of Christ. Its details are the figures of Christ crucified and the Virgin, the Eagle, the Angel, the Sun and the Ox mentioned by St. John, and the various incidentals of the crucifixion, e. g., the dice of the soldiers, the lash, spear, etc., all arranged in the systematical style of an ordinary coat-of-arms.

Illumination. Illuminated Illustrations of Froissart, selected from the MS., in the Bibliothèque Royale, Paris, and from other Sources. By H. N. Humphreys. A series of 72 elegant plates. Illuminated by hand in gold, silver and colors. Royal 8vo, half morocco, gilt, gilt edges. Wm. Smith, London, 1845 The original Edition. Scarce.
