THIS EXTREMELY RARE WORK, which is of the greatest importance for the history of Mexico, was written by order of Lope Diaz de Armendariz, Marquis de Cadereita, Viceroy of New Spain. It contains a description of the place in which the City of Mexico is founded, of the mountains and lakes surrounding it; and a history of all the work done to preserve the city from inundations (of which the one of September, 1629, was the most disastrous), and especially an official account of the celebrated Desaque, or canal Gueguetoca, called by Humboldt, Huehuetoca, constructed to carry off the superabundant waters of the Lake of Mexico.

The above copy, which is in good condition, as Mexican books go, and is one of the three or four perfect examples, CONTAINING THE FOURTH PART WITH ITS TITLE, which was issued more than three months after the publication of the work, and inserted in the volume by order of the Viceroy, on account of the judicious observations contained therein. It is apparently the first to appear for sale in a period of thirty-five years. It was once in possession of Captain J. Jose Pastor Morales, and has at the end an autograph inscription by him dated June 29, 1831, presenting the volume to the well-known Mexican statesman and bibliophile, Don Lucas Alaman, whose book-label is in the front cover.

Paris: Jean Berjon, 1613 FIRST EDITION, with 52 additional pages containing a fourth voyage (1613) not mentioned in the Index.
