SIR, * *T* HERE was lately Vol. XVIII Let-S publifh'd A Let ter to the Lord Archbishop of Can Letter to the Lord Achbi terbury, proving, eminent Presbyterian Clergyman in bout the faid Letter to his Grace is as follows: A There My Lord, TH HERE is lately printed in Swifferland, a Book entituled, Oratio Hiftorica de Beneficiis in Ecclefiam Tigurinam collatis. • An Historical Oration concerning the Mercies bestow'd upon the Church of Zurich.' In the 14th Page of which Oration the Author gives an Account of the prefent State of the English Church, as the fame was transmitted from hence in an Epiftle to a principal Perfon (or Ruler) there, from one of the like,or greater Character here. As this Epistle gives a frightful Representation of the State of Religion amongst us, in general; and, more particularly, of the Diftreffes and Dangers, which accrue to the Church of England, from Schifm, Herefy, and the Miniftry, I herewith fend it to your Grace. I have tranflated it for the Benefit of my lefs learned Readers, and added fome Obfervations of my own, to expose a lurking Author, who deceives and prejudices the World abroad with a bafe Image of our Church Affairs under your Grace's Adminiftration. And I do it the rather, because, my Lord, fome People are fo very ignorant and malicious, as to furmife that your Grace was the Author of that Letter, which is fo inconfiftent with your former Life and Character. Immò Paftores, Epifcopi ipfi manibus Ecclefiam diruunt, in quâ miniftrant; ad cujus doarinam pluries fubfcripfere: Quibus defenfio Ecclefiæ conmiflà, quorum munus eft T In English thus. and is broken by HE Church of EngParties, and rent by Schifms, and in short, diftracted with fuck a Number, and Variety of Separatifts, that they want apt Names to diftinguish themselves from one another, and to defcribe themselves to the rest of the World. And I wish even this were our highest Ground of Complaint! But it must be fulfilled, what the Holy Spirit foretold in Times paft; fo that among our felves Men have arifen, speaking perverse Things. But why do I fay Men? When even Paftors, way, the Bishops themselves pull down, with their own Hands, the Church in which they minifter, and to whose Doctrine they have over and over fubfcribed, even they to whom the Prefer vation |
