TO AMEND AND ENLARGE

THE POWERS OF AN ACT PASSED IN THE ELEVENTH YEAR

OF HIS PRESENT MAJESTY'S REIGN,

FOR PERFORMING SEVERAL WORKS,

AND

MAKING IMPROVEMENTS

WITHIN THE

UNIVERSITY AND CITY OF OXFORD,

AND IN THE SUBURBS THEREOF,

AND

IN THE ADJOINING PARISH OF SAINT CLEMENT,

ACT

To amend and enlarge the Powers of an Act paffed in the Eleventh Year of his present Majefty's Reign, for performing several Works, and making Improvements within the Univerfity and City of Oxford, and the Suburbs thereof, and in the adjoining Parish of Saint Clement.

Wye of his prefent Majefty's Reign, for amending certain of the Mile-Ways leading to Oxford; for making a commodious Entrance through the Parish of Saint Clement; for Rebuilding or Repairing Magdalen Bridge; for making commodious Roads from the faid Bridge, through the Univerfity and City, and the Avenues leading thereto; for Cleanfing and Lighting the Streets, Lanes, and Places within the faid Univerfity and City, and the Suburbs thereof, and the faid Parish of Saint Clement; for Removing Nuifances and Annoyances therefrom, and preventing the like for the future; for empowering Colleges and Corporations to alienate their Eftates there; for Removing, Holding, and Regulating Markets within the said City, and for other purposes:

and taken down, in order to make commodious Avenues to the faid Bridge and Entrance into and through the faid Univerfity and City; the principal Street, called the High Street, new paved, and feveral other Works performed, wherein a large Sum of Money hath been expended, which was taken up at Intereft on the Credit of the Tolls by the said A&t granted :

And whereas the faid Tolls are to have Continuance from the Commencement thereof for the Term of Twenty-one Years, and to the End of the then next Seffion of Parliament :

And whereas the faid Bridge and Avenues thereto cannot be cannot be completed, and the Money fo borrowed be completed without a repaid, and the Bridge and Mile-Ways kept in Repair further in future, unless the faid Tolls are continued for a Term and further Term, and fome other Affiftance given :

And tubereas fome other Amendments and further Regulations are wanting to the faid Act to make it extenfively useful ;

May it therefore please your MAJESTY,

That it may be Enacted; And be it Enacted by the KING'S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons in this prefent Parliament affembled, and by the Authority of the fame, That so much of the faid Act paffed in the Eleventh Year of his present Majefty's Reign as relates to the Tolls refpecting thereby granted, and to the Mile-Ways, Stone-Bridge, Tolls, &c. continued and Avenues thereto, fhall have Continuance from the for a further Expiration of the Term by the faid Act limited, for

and during the further Term of Twenty-one Years, and to the End of the then next Seffion of Parliament.

And be it further Enacted, That it fhall be lawful for Double the Commiffioners for putting the faid Act in Execu-Toll on Sundays. tion, or any Nine or more of them, from Time to Time, and for fo long Time as they fhall think proper, after giving Fourteen Days Notice in writing, upon all the Turnpikes, to caufe double the Tolls by the faid A&t granted to be demanded, taken, or recovered for the Paffage of Horses, Cattle, Beafts, and Carriages, on a Sunday, (the Day to be computed from Twelve of the Clock in Saturday Night to Twelve of the Clock in Sunday Night), which Toll hereby granted fhall and may be collected, recovered, levied, affigned, and applied, in fuch and the fame Manner, and be under and fubject to the fame Terms and Conditions as are in the faid former Act and this A&t given, granted, and provided, with respect to the Tolls by that Act granted.

And be it further Enacted, That in all Cafes of Car- Paffengers riages travelling for Hire, the firft Payment fhall not exempt fuch Carriages (Stage Coaches only excepted) returning, or repaffing with a different Traveller or Paffenger, Travellers or Paffengers; but that he, fhe, or they, fhall be obliged to pay the Toll in the fame Manner as if the faid Carriage had not before paffed in that Day; any Thing in the faid Act, or in this Act contained to the contrary notwithstanding.

And be it further Enacted, That the faid Commif- Expence fioners, or any Five or more of them, fhall caufe all of Cleanf Expences of Cleanfing and Lighting the faid Bridge, Lighting from Time to Time, to be paid and defrayed out of the the Bridge Tolls granted by the faid former Act, and this Act, or out of the out of the Money to be borrowed upon the Credit thereof, and not out of any Rate to be made for Cleanfing and Lighting as was directed by the faid former Act; any Thing therein or herein contained to the contrary notwithstanding.

And be it further Enacted, That if any Perfon or Penalty for damagPersons shall negligently or carelessly deface or damage ing the the Bridge, &c.
