Dieses seltene Werk war ein Hülfsmittel für das Gedächtniss, um sich die von den vier Evangelisten mitgetheilten Erzählungen merken zu können. Zu diesem Endzwecke ist jedesmal das Symbol des betreffenden Evangelisten zu Grunde gelegt (also bei Matthäus der Engel, bei Marcus der Löwe, bei Lucas der Ochse, bei Johannes der Adler). Auf diesem Symbole sind sodann andere Bilder angebracht, welche auf Erzählungen von Christus oder Aussprüche von ihm hindeuten; die daneben stehende Zahl zeigt das Capitel an, wo sie sich finden. Zum Beispiel das zweite Bild zum Lucasevangelium zeigt auf der Unterlage des Lucas-Symboles (des geflügelten Stieres) sechs Symbole, mit den Zahlen 7-12 bezeichnet. Num. 7. auf dem Haupte des Stieres ist ein Salbenbüchschen, weil Cap. 7. Vs. 37 fgd. erzählt wird, dass Maria Magdalena die Füsse Jesu gesalbt habe. Num. 8. hat das Bild eines Samenbeutels, welcher in einem Boote XVII. Jahrgang.

steht; jener bezieht sich auf das in Cap. 8. (Vs. 5 fgd.) stehende Gleichniss Christi von dem Säemann, dieses auf die ebendas. (Vs. 22 fgd.) befindliche Erzählung, wie Christus im Schiffe den Meeressturm beschwichtigt. - Num. 9. steht neben einem Schlüssel, einer Sonne und fünf Broten. Letztere beziehen sich auf die Speisung der 5000 Mann mit fünf Broten (Cap. 9. Vs. 13 fgd.), der Schlüssel auf Christi Wort an Petrus:,,Ich will dir des Himmelreiches Schlüssel geben" (vgl. ebendas. Vs. 18 fgd.), die Sonne auf die Verklärung Christi (ebendas. Vs. 29 fgd.) Num. 10. ist eine weibliche Figur mit Bezug auf Maria und Martha (Cap. 10, Vs. 38 fgd.); hinter ihr ist ein Schwert sichtbar, welches auf die Mörder im Gleichniss vom barmherzigen Samariter geht (ebendas. Vs. 30.) Um das rechte Hinterbein des Stieres aber ist eine Binde angebracht mit Hindeutung auf den barmherzigen Samariter (Vs, 34:,,er verband in"). Num. 11. zeigt einen Teufel mit Hindeutung auf die Worte Cap. 11, Vs. 14:,,Und er trieb einen Teufel aus, der war stumm." Darunter hält der Stier in der rechten Vorderklaue einen Rosenkranz, denn ebendas. Vs. 11. heiss es:,,Herr, lehre uns beten!" Num. 12. steht über dem linken Vorderbeine des Stieres eine Geldkiste mit einem Herzen darauf, weil Christus Cap. 12, Vs. 34. sagt: Wo euer Schatz ist, da ist auch euer Herz."

Es ist dies die zweite Ausgabe dieses merkwürdigen Holzschnittproductes, welches unter die grössten Seltenheiten gehört. Sie ist fast gleich selten wie die erste (welche in Dresden 1774. für 231 Thlr. gekauft wurde). Die erste Ausgabe liest S. 1. Z. 17. und 18: Colle grabatum tuum et ambula.
