Its sides and decks were to be protected by heavy iron plates set at such angles that no shot fired at it could strike at a greater angle than 15 degrees, thus causing the shots to ricochet without penetrating the deck or sides. The chief use of the boat was the firing of a liquid composition through tubes passing through orifices in the deck which on coming in contact with the air would instantly take fire.
