J. CARROLL BECKWITH MEMORIAL EXHIBITION

THE

HE recent death of J. Carroll Beckwith has occasioned another one of the Prints Division's usual memorial exhibitions. About two dozen of the artist's drawings have been placed on view in the Stuart Gallery. Presented by the artist himself some years ago, they may be considered a representative showing of his activity in a field of work which he considered of basic importance in art, draughtsmanship.

NEWS OF THE MONTH

GIFTS

DURING the month of October, 1917, the Library received a total of 1,620

volumes, 4,883 pamphlets, 345 maps and 2 prints. Some of the more important and interesting of these gifts were the following: - From the "Reparticão de Estatistica e Archivo do Estado de São Paulo," Brazil, were received a collection of official publications of São Paulo, Brazil, comprising 155 volumes and 19 pamphlets, and from the "Instituto Historico e Geographico de São Paulo," 19 volumes of their "Revista." From Mr. C. F. Richards of New York came a collection of publications relating to philately, containing 52 volumes, 870 pamphlets, and 52 circulars.

Mr. William Jean Beauley gave a copy of his etching "The City Gate"; Mr. John W. Evans of Brooklyn, a copy of his wood-engraving after the portrait of Thomas A. Edison by J. E. Kelly; and Mr. Thomson Price of New York, a photograph of the New York Reservoir, built by his grandfather, Thomson Price, in 1842.

From Miss Grace Bigelow, Highland Falls, N. Y., came a collection of public documents and miscellaneous material, comprising 16 volumes and 118 pamphlets; from Mr. William A. Chapman, Montreal, P. Q., a copy of his work, "Chronicles of the Class of 1873, Rutgers College," 1917; from Dr. Pedro Castro Escalada, Buenos Aires, Argentine Republic, a copy of his work in two volumes, "Curieterapia (Radiumterapia)," Buenos Aires, 19151916; from Mr. Desmond Fitzgerald, Brookline, Mass., a copy of his work "Dodge Macknight, water color painter," Brookline, 1916 (privately printed); and from Mr. E. A. Posselt of Philadelphia, two copies of his work, "Wool, cotton, silk from fibre to finished fabric, covering both woven and knit goods (Posselt's Textile Library, volume 9)."

ADDITIONS AND USE OF THE LIBRARY IN OCTOBER, 1917

DURING the month of October, 1917, there were received at the Library 26,646 volumes and 5,483 pamphlets. (These figures include the additions to both Reference and Circulation Departments.) The total number of readers recorded in the Central Building was 69,112. Visitors to the Building numbered 231,385.
