That the Thesis be sent to the Regius Professor at least us Professor. a fortnight before the time for keeping the Act, and after the Act is kept, the Thesis or a copy of it remain in the custody of the Professor.

The Board further recommend, with a view to give greater publicity to and invite attendance on the Act,

The Syndicate recommend the following Regulations:
1. Any person may be a Candidate for the degree of
Doctor in Science or Doctor in Letters who is a Master of
Arts, Law or Surgery of not less than five years standing or
a Bachelor of Medicine of not less than seven years standing.

2. Such Candidate shall make his application in writing
to the Chairman of the Special Board of Studies with which
he considers that the subject of his original contribution to
the advancement of Science or Learning is most nearly con-
nected and shall specify therein the printed contribution or
contributions to the advancement of Science or Learning
upon which his claim for a degree is based.

3. Such applications shall be referred to a Committee of the Special Board of Studies which shall consist of the Chairman of the Board, of the Professors and Readers who are members of such Board either by Statute or by Grace, as Professors (including the Public Orator in the case of the Classical Board) or Readers, and the Members of the Senate elected to serve on the Board for a term of years,

4. If such Committee shall be of opinion that the original to referees, contributions to the advancement of Science or Learning constitute primâ facie a qualification for a degree, they shall obtain reports upon them from not less than two persons, who may be members of the Committee or not. These reports shall be treated as confidential documents.

5. If the Committee be of opinion that the work of who may be reporting upon such contributions is such as to require muneration they may direct that a fee not exceeding ten guineas shall be paid from the Chest to each referee.

6. If the Committee be of opinion that the degree should be granted, their resolution to that effect, with the names of those present, and of those voting on either side, accompanied by the report of the referees, shall be communicated to the General Board of Studies.

7. No final resolution of the Committee on the subject Quorum of of the grant of a degree shall be taken except at a meeting at which not less than two-thirds of the Members of the Committee are present.

8. If the General Board of Studies after receiving such communication shall be of opinion that the degree ought to be conferred, the Vice-Chancellor shall publish the name of the Candidate as approved for the degree of Doctor in Science or Doctor in Letters as the case may be.

9. If the Committee either without obtaining a report or after receiving the report of the referees shall be of opinion that a degree ought not to be granted, the Chairman of the Special Board of Studies shall inform the Candidate of the fact.

10. No Candidate for a degree shall be present at the deliberations either of the Committee or of the General Board of Studies respecting his own case.

11. The fee payable on admission to the degree of Fee of £20 on Doctor in Science or Doctor in Letters shall be £20.

12. Candidates for the degrees of Doctor in Science or Presentation. Doctor in Letters shall be presented for their degrees by the

13. Doctors in Science and Doctors in Letters shall take
precedence immediately after Doctors in Medicine in the
order of seniority of their complete degree.

14. Doctors in Science or Letters created Doctors on or before the Commencement Day of the year 1887 shall after that day take precedence as if they had all been created Doctors on that day.

SECT. 14. Students of Music.

The Council of the Senate recommend:

That Candidates for Musical Degrees be required to matriculate [except those who had entered, or had passed one of the Examinations in Music, before 19 May, 1881. Grace 8 Dec. 1881.]

The Syndicate recommend that for the Degree of Bachelor of Music the performance of the Exercise in public be discontinued, [and that the performances of the Exercises of the Candidates hereafter approved for the Degree of Mus. Doc., as ordained by the Graces of the Senate of Feb. 18, 1853, and Feb. 27, 1868, be no longer compulsory. Report 30 April 1878. Grace 7 Nov. 1878.] In both cases they think that the Exercises, written for voices and full orchestra, and the Examinations of the Candidates by the Professor, should be retained.

That the Recommendation marked A in the Report, dated May 11, 18771, May 31, 1877. of the Syndicate appointed to consider whether any, and, if any, what change should be made in the Musical Examinations of the University and in the requirements for Musical Degrees, be confirmed.

in one of the subjects of Sections C and D (viz. :
Latin, Greek, French, or German); and in Section
E (Euclid and Algebra);

or (c) produce a certificate of having satisfied the Ex-
aminers in one of the "Higher Local Examinations"

of the University;

or (d) produce the certificate of the "Oxford and Cam-
bridge Schools Examination Board.”

B.

That the Examination for the Degree of Mus. Bac. Subjects for consist of three parts:

(1) A preliminary Examination in

(a) Acoustics,

(b) Harmony,

(c) Counterpoint.

(2) The Exercise.

(3) A more advanced Examination in Musical Science : and that no person be accepted as a Candidate for the second or third part of the Examination until he has qualified in the previous part, or parts.

That Examination (1) be conducted partly on paper and partly viva voce, and be held on the Thursday and Friday next but two before the General Admission to the B.A. Degree in the Easter Term. That should that Thursday be Ascension Day, the Examination be held on the Thursday and Friday in the week preceding.

That the names of Candidates be sent by the Prælectors to the Professor of Music at least a fortnight before the Examination, and that Candidates for the Degree in Arts (see Ordinationes, page 28) be specified as such.

That the names of the successful Candidates be published in the Senate-House at the latest at 10 a.m. on the Thursday before the General Admission to the B.A. Degree in the Easter Term.

That the names of Candidates be arranged in two classes, those in the first class being placed in order of merit, and those in the second alphabetically.

That (2) the Exercise be sent to the Professor of Music by the Candidate on or before the first day of the Michaelmas. Term, and be accompanied by a written declaration, signed by the Candidate, that the work is his own unaided composition.

That the names of those whose Exercises have been approved be published in the Senate-House before 10 a.m. on the last Thursday but one in November.

That (3) the more advanced Examination be conducted
partly on paper and partly viva voce, and be held on the first
Thursday in December, and on the following day.

That the Candidates should send their names to. the
Professor of Music at least a week before the Examination.

That the names of the successful Candidates be published
in the Senate-House on or before the third Thursday in
December, and be arranged in alphabetical order.

That before being admitted to his Degree a Candidate be required to deposit in the University Library a complete fair copy of his Exercise.
