The TESTING of MATERIALS of CONSTRUCTION: a Text-Book for the Engineering Laboratory and a Collection of the Results of Experiment, with 5 plates and 141 other illustrations, thick 8vo. cl., with auto. of F. An extremely rare and interesting work of which three varieties are known: two having the descriptions only in Latin and Italian, one issue of which has only 40 plates, and the third as above with the descriptions also in Spanish, French, German, and 49 plates. This issue is the rarest of all. Some of the plates are of great importance, e.g. plate 38' Homovolans', giving a perfect representation of a parachute, plates 34-36 suspension bridges, of which no. 34 is the earliest description of one wholly of iron, 49 a driving belt, 41 a dredging machine, 43 a rope-making machine, 40 a boat with paddle wheels going up a river, and a great variety of wind, water, and mechanically-driven mills, oil presses, etc. represents Ecclesia Sibenici'.

Plate 4

The author, a native of Sebenico, Dalmatia, was Bishop in Partibus of Canadium, in Hungary, and in his later years seems to have lived in Venice. There is a full description of the work in M. Libri's Histoire des Sciences Mathématiques, where it is termed 'un ouvrage très-rare qui ne se trouve guère indiqué par les bibliographes.'

At the end of the descriptions is a List of Machines of the author's own invention, fra le quali veramente alcune sono interessantissime' (Riccardi).

Amstelodami, apud Lud. Elzevirium, 1649 'Magnifique édition.' -A. Willems. 'Belle édition. Elle est encore recherchée, et les exemplaires en sont assez rares.' --Brunet. It is interesting to find Sir Henry Wotton's treatise among the works included.

'A work of great labour, which offers a rich mine to the scientific student. The third volume, illustrated by 34 admirable engravings of machinery by Lowry, deals with the 'specification of patents'; the second with 'extracts from correspondence'. Is privately printed, 1873 Containing the author's great discovery, that of fluid-compressed ductile steel for the manufacture of big guns; also 'giving an account of my system of rifled guns, and showing how it originated and has been developed,' etc. etc., but especially interesting for telling the story of his differences with the Admiralty.

In 1873 he gave to the world his own version of the points at issue with the Ordnance Department in 'Miscellaneous Papers on Practical [sic] Subjects: Guns and Steel'. The unfortunate treatment to which he was subjected was due in part, no doubt, to his plain and inflexible determination.'-D. N. B.

An exceedingly interesting storehouse of extravaganzas in engineering, and of special interest for containing descriptions of a number of machines, some of them the author's own invention, supposed to produce PERPETUAL MOTION, & subject in which he took a special interest; 72 pages are devoted to this subject. There are also three chapters on Airmanship: 'Of the volant Automata, Archytas his Dove, and Regiomontanus his Eagle. The possibility and great usefulness of such inventions; Concerning the Art of flying. The several ways whereby this hath been, or may be attempted. A resolution of the two chief difficulties that seem to oppose the possibility of a flying Chariot'; and others of the contrivance of several motions by rarified air,' on 'Wind-guns', 'an Ark for submarine Navigation', etc. etc. etc.

1825

This celebrated work, originally published in 1663, consists of short accounts or outlines of ideas of one hundred inven. tions claimed by the author. The most important is undoubtedly No. 100, on the basis of which Mr. Dircks and others claimed for the author the Invention of the Steam Engine. The description is but a vague one of a 'water commanding engine', termed by him 'the most stupendous work in the whole world'. No. 68 describes an admirable and most forcible way to drive up water by fire', while No. 5 contains a suggestion of shorthand, and No. 84 one of a calculating machine. No 77 is important in the history of airmanship, being how to make a man to fly', and Nos. 59, 64 and 67 contain improvements in fire-arms.

It has been claimed that Berthoud was the first to apply compensation to the balance of the watch-the final step in the production of the chronometer-an invention generally ascribed to Harrison. He undoubtedly made the first pocket watch with compensation curb, and moreover invented an escapement in which the balance makes two vibrations in the time that one tooth only of the wheel escapes.
