BOOKS ON THE FINE ARTS:

BOOKSELLERS' TRADE CARDS, continued :—

Bar, also calls himself an Importer of German, Bath, Bristol, and other Mineral Waters, the various bottles of which are illustrated on his Card.

It is usual in a fine Collection of old Trade Cards to find a few examples of Booksellers; but this is the only Collection the advertisers have ever heard of exclusively devoted to the BOOK TRADE, with a few examples of allied Trades such as Printers, Engravers, etc.

Many of the Cards are remarkable both for the excellence of their design and the beauty of their engraving, and form altogether an interesting Commentary on the wealth of care and artistic taste that was often spent on the little things of business life in the leisurely days of the XVIIIth Century.

The advertisers have added to the collection, as an illustration of present day mechanical work, the copy of an old French Print which they used as an Invitation Card to their Exhibition of Books and Prints on Marie Antoinette just before the War. The recent lengthy correspondence in the Times Literary Supplement adds interest and significance to the affinity between Booksellers' signs and Trade Cards. 70 BOOKSELLERS: A UNIQUE COLLECTION of 150 PORTRAITS of BOOKSELLERS and PUBLISHERS of the EIGHTEENTH and EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURIES, in LINE, MEZZOTINT, or STIPPLE; including many rare and curious items and a few ORIGINAL DRAWINGS; ALSO a number of INTERIOR and EXTERIOR VIEWS of OLD BOOKSHOPS, AUCTION ROOMS, PRINTING OFFICES, etc., as well as a few single-page CATALOGUES, MS.
