THE CHILDREN'S CORNER.

SANCTIFIED AFFICTIONS.-Lord, when the flail of affliction is upon me, let me not be the chaff that flies in thy face, but let me be the corn that lies at thy feet!

CARE AND PRAYER.-Turn your care into prayer; so Hannah did, and her countenance was no more sad.

FAITH AND OBEDIENCE are like the two feet of a pair of compasses; one is fixed in Christ as the centre, the other moves round in a circle of holy duties.

SABBATH DAYS.-For every twenty years of our lives, we enjoy above a thousand sabbaths, which must be all accounted for in the day of reckoning.

AN EMRLEM.-Joseph's many coloured coat was an emblem of the various providences of his life.

Poetic Selections.

TRUST IN THE REDEEMER. JESUS, on thy word relying,

We would trust thy power to save ; Thou didst conquer death by dying, Thou hast lighted up the grave. Death, we fear not now thy stinging; Grave, we dread not now thy gloom; Lo, he comes, salvation bringing; Come, Lord Jesus, quickly come!

PREPARE FOR A STORM. LIFE is a sea, where storms must rise, And darkness often veil the skies. He who contracts his swelling sails, Eludes the fury of the gales; And if he trust one pilot wise, Will sail at last 'neath cloudless skies.

FLIGHT OF TIME.

SWIFTLY as each moment flies, Wiser grow, and yet more wise; Every moment shortens day; Every pulse beats life away; Every time thou drawest breath, Nearer then thou art to death; Use thy moments as they fly; Live in Christ-so learn to die.

[blocks in formation]

To the Great God on high we will now raise our voices,
And praise that rich fountain whose streams to us flow;
Reviewing past mercies, what heart but rejoices?

And shall children be silent? Ah, never! Ah, no!

While in life's early dawn, when as yet we were strangers
To earth, its temptations, its care, and its woe,
God gave us kind friends, and preserved us from dangers;
And shall we be ungrateful? Ah, never! Ah, no!

When our teachers and friends in the cold grave are sleeping,
We'll visit their tombs, our affection to show,

And drop a tear silent when they have ceas'd weeping-
Not a tear falls in heaven. Ah, never! Ah, no!
