It is not pretended that it presents any complete analysis of the opinions of the teachers who are reviewed. In each instance such salient points only in the teachings of the writer under notice are dwelt upon as most aptly illustrate his attitude towards religious thought. The first three Lectures form one group, and were delivered last winter under the title that has been given to this volume. The fourth Lecture is from another course. The fifth and sixth are unconnected with the rest; they illustrate the injurious influence of too rigid an allegiance to the letter of the New Testament on the writings of an eloquent, liberal, and distinguished teacher. |
