PREFACE

TO THE FOURTH EDITION.

THIS Edition has been carefully revised, and the Editors hope that it will be found of use to junior practitioners as well as to students, for whom it is especially designed.

With this view, historical matter has been deemed out of place, and the modern law preferred, except where the latter is not intelligible without some reference to the former.

The Editors have introduced numerous references to Littleton, Coke, and other early authorities, and have made much use of Cruise's "Digest of the Law of Real Property," of the valuable "History of the Law of Real Property," by Mr. Kenelm Digby, and of the learning of Mr. Challis's well-known work.

The Text and Notes have in all cases been brought up to date, and numerous transpositions have been made which, in the opinion of the Editors, render the sequence of the Text more logical.

It is hoped that the utility of the Appendix has been increased by references inserted throughout to those passages of the Text bearing on the various sections of the statutes contained in it, and to any alterations or amendments made by any later statutes.
