:

have brought forth who can tell what it shall impress on days to come?

Who shall reckon up his share in the motion with which it tendeth and espy the direction which it hath given to eternity?

:

O Lord sustain me, for my heart fainteth with fear I am horribly afraid for the end of my stewardship.

:

I call to mind the faithlessness of this day: shall it be felt in wants of days to come?

I consider the sins of this day shall they rise up again in sins of generations to come?

Shall my transgressions not enter the grave with me shall they live in the sorrows of an age unborn?

And eyes that I see not shall weep through my fault and voices that I hear not shall curse my folly.

:

Though they know me not, and the remembrance of me be long blotted out : shall I be innocent of the offence?

O Lord, what wilt Thou do with me what lot wilt Thou assign me?

Wilt Thou show love to him that hath helped to mar thy works of love: wilt Thou manifest thy mercy to him that forgot the stewardship of thy mercy?

Wilt Thou be a father to him whose sins are corrupting thy children: shall he minister to thy glory, whose faithlessness hath helped to the blaspheming of thy name?

O when I think of these things, fear and shame overwhelm me and confusion hath covered my face.

I would that I had never come out of the dust: I would that I may never come out of the dust again.

But then, O Christ, I remember Thee : in the depth of my confusion I find Thee.

Thou bringest me up again from the pit : Thou settest me on high.

Thou wipest the tears from mine eyes: Thou fillest my heart with joy.

Thou coverest all my sins: Thou blottest out all my transgressions.

And Thou shalt destroy the works of the Devil and shalt restore all things anew.

:

And the hearts of thy servants shall obey Thee as at the beginning and their tongue shall sing thy praises for evermore.

XVII.

A SONG OF PRAISE.

THE noise of men's labour is silent: the voice of command and obedience hath ceased. And mine ear is free again to thy voice: O Thou Lord and Governor of all.

The heavens, the work of thine hands, send

:

it forth the sounds of earth no longer interrupt it.

It soundeth deep and long and my heart maketh melody thereto.

For thy word hath quickened me : thy Holy Spirit hath moved me.

Sing unto the Lord, O earth: and all ye men the inhabitants thereof.

:

Sing unto the Lord ye heavens and all ye angels and children of glory.

Ascribe honour to his name: praise and bless Him continually.

For He hath done a marvellous work : and his mercy endureth for ever.

He hath bought man out of his captivity: He hath brought him up out of the pit.

He hath turned his darkness into light: He hath broken the fetters of his slavery.

He hath clothed his nakedness with royal raiment and put a crown of glory upon his head.

:

Yet a little while, and thy voice shall be heard for the last time on earth, O Lord: and the ear shall hear it and not the heart only.

Thou shalt come with a shout from heaven : and the dead shall hear it, and not the living only.

Then time shall be no more: no night shall come upon that day.

No rest shall receive men but the rest in

heaven: And they shall look for no morning to end it.

O Christ, Thou shalt be glorified on that day: let my song be an earnest of my tribute on that morning.

When heaven and earth shall sound with the voice of thy praise: and angels and men shall sing together.

O be in my waking thoughts this night : hallow the imagination of my dreams.

I lay me down in peace: O raise me in the thankfulness of a song of praise.

XVIII.

A COMMITTAL INTO THE HANDS OF THE CAPTAIN OF SALVATION.

EVEN as the soldier seeketh his tent at eve : when the struggle of the fight is over.

And they minister to his hunger and thirst: they wash the blood and sweat from his limbs. They dress his wounds and lay him down

to rest.

:

So do I seek the secret of thy tabernacle : O Thou Captain of salvation.

I am weary of the strife of the world : I am faint from the struggle with its iniquities.

O refresh my weariness and heal all my wounds,

Thou that didst faint with agony for our sins and wast wounded for our transgressions.

Forgive all unwatchfulness of this day remember not where I have lost good courage. Bear with the weakness of my arm : pardon the slipping of my foot.

Lay me down in repose this night and strengthen me against the battle of to-morrow. Send me forth in good courage in the morning: crown me with the victory of faith.

O Thou Saviour of the world: Thou hast been gracious unto thy servant this day.

O Thou mighty in battle: Thou hast covered my head in this day of battle.

XIX.

A THANKSGIVING FOR PRIVILEGES.

O FATHER of lights: Thou in the beginning didst divide light from darkness.

Thou didst send thine only-begotten Son : to be the light and life of man.

Thou hast caused the light of thy Holy Spirit to shine in his heart to give him the knowledge of thy glory.
