IT was not the intention of the publishers, when they presented their first Catalogue, in the fall of 1817, so soon to appear with a second; the labour of compilation alone being sufficient to deter them from a very early repetition. The rapid sale, however, of many of... the most valuable works; the purchase of an extensive collection, made by an able scholar, during a tour of health in Europe; together with the continual accessions which they were receiving from various quarters, obliged them again to give their Catalogue to the public.

The plan of the former one has been adopted; and the compiler can only regret that he has fallen short of his intention, in giving the character of a greater variety of authors; but the labour is too great to be accomplished in one or two years. At the same time he does not wish to conceal that his intention is to give a Catalogue raisonné of the most esteemed authors, in every department and in every language. In doing this he shall avail himself of all the aid within his power, whether from the works of the illustrious dead, or the learned living. So much attention has, of late years, been paid to the study of bibliography, and so many able works from Mattaire down to the present phalanx of bibliographers, have been written, as very much to have smoothed the path of the present and future student: still, it requires extensive research, which some degree of leisure and much time and care can alone accomplish. How much of either will be afforded to the present compiler, must depend on circumstances which no human foresight can control; but he pledges himself, under all circumstances, excepting the loss of health, never to lose sight of his first object.

The books in the present Catalogue are given as bound, unless otherwise mentioned. Those of old dates are mostly in old bindings, but, in general, in fine order. In the Classical, and Latin and Greek Theological departments, every care has been taken to collect the

most approved editions; and there will be found some articles, which the best European Catalogues cannot furnish. To these the attention of the learned and the curious is particularly called.

In the collection of Mathematical Works they have been assisted by a gentleman of extensive science, who is thoroughly acquainted with every mathematical writer for the two last centuries; their collections under this head are not inconsiderable-but they present them only as the beginning. In a short time they hope to possess one copy, at least, of every distinguished writer in this important science.

To the collection of History and Theology the proprietors have devoted much of their attention. The Catalogue will show what they have done already; and their arrangements are now such as to enable them very much to enrich these departments. They have on the way, from different parts of Europe, from 1500 to 2000 articles, a Supplementary Catalogue of which shall be given, when the books have arrived, and have been arranged for that purpose.

Orders, as heretofore, will be executed according to the date of their receipt; and should any books, ordered, be sold, the person shall be entitled to the first copies which are received. This will be strictly adhered to.

The proprietors take this opportunity of returning their thanks to public institutions, as well as to private gentlemen, not only for their warm approbation of the present plan, expressed in the most handsome terms, but also for the patronage which they have received; and they request a continuance of their favours on the same liberal principles which have hitherto distinguished them. Orders by mail, from any part of the United States, will meet instant attention; and they will import, from Great Britain and any part of the Continent of Europe, any number of books, whether one, or more, as suit the purchasers. Orders also for Periodical Works, from London and Paris, will be regularly attended to.
