BURIAL OF THE DEAD.

When the Procession is entering the Church, the Minister shall say these Sentences:

I

AM the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. St. John xi. 25, 26.

LL flesh is grass, and all the goodliness

grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand forever. Isa. xl. 6-8.

LIKE as a father pitieth his children, so the

Lord pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. Psalm ciii. 13, 14.

WE

E brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can carry nothing out. The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: Blessed be the name of the Lord! 1 Tim. vi. 7; Job i. 21.

The following Selections, or a portion of them, may then be read as a Scripture Lesson.

LORD, make me to know mine end,

and

the measure of my days, that I may know

how frail I am.

Behold thou hast made my days as it were a span long, and mine age is even as nothing in respect of thee.

For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain; he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them. And now, Lord, what is my hope? truly my hope is even in thee.

Hear my prayer, O Lord, and with thine ears consider my calling; hold not thy peace at my tears.

For I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.

O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength, before I go hence, and be no more Psalm xxxix.

LORD, thou hast been our dwelling-place in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.

For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep; in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth

up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength, labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off and we fly away.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Psalm xc.

THE Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm xxiii.

THOU shalt not be afraid for the terror by

night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Psalm xci. 5, 6.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. I am the way, and the truth, and the life: I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. WE know that, if our earthly house of this

tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Cor. v. I.

THE Spirit itself beareth witness with

our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Rom. viii. 16–18.
