THE BOOK of PSALMS, a New Translation, with Notes Explanatory and Critical. By W. WALFORD, late Classical and Hebrew Tutor in the Academy at Homerton. 1 vol. 8vo, 15s. cloth.

*** This volume contains a version of the entire Book of Psalms, formed on the basis of the authorized and public translation: no greater departure from the language of that translation has been adopted than what appeared to be requisite to an accurate representation of the Hebrew text. To each Psalm is prefixed an introduction, intended to give the history of it, as far as it can be ascertained; and a brief summary of its principal contents. A few notes are attached to each of the Sacred Poems, chiefly for the purpose of explanation; and the remarks which are of a more critical character are placed at the end of the book, together with an Appendix, containing some short dissertations on the most difficult inquiries which relate to the interpretation of this beautiful, affecting, and generally interesting portion of the Holy Scriptures.

"The improvements which he (Mr. W.) has made are not inconsiderable."-Church of England Quarterly. "The Author has succeeded in placing several obscure passages in a more perspicuous light by new or improved renderings."-Methodist Mag.

"These discourses are written with great care, and display stores of information, both ancient and modern, which few Theologians of the day could emulate, and very few, if any, could exceed.”— British Critic.

"No well informed or well principled persons can be otherwise than gratified to see in Dr. H.'s work that rare admixture of great learning and extensive research, with unaffected modesty and candour, and deep spirituality-of enlightened views, with soundness of doctrine and sobriety of thought, which remind us of the good old times of our Theology, when there were giants in the land.” ”_ Preface to Dr. Bloomfield's Edition of Robinson's Greek Lexicon.

"To describe the mode in which he expands and enriches the topics he handles, the learning he brings to bear upon each subject, the philosophical spirit with which he illustrates it, the logical power by which he collects the scattered facts and reasons to support his main argument, and the historical light he throws upon the early state and doctrines of the church, upon the principles of Profane Philosophy and of Pagan and Jewish Superstitions, is impossible; to appreciate these, the book must be read from beginning to end."-Spectator.
