Increase in me, O my Jesus, the love of the beauty of thy house, and of the place where thy glory dwelleth. Thou hast directed my feet in the way of thy peace, and of thy truth; in the churches I will bless thee, O Lord. Amen.

A Prayer when the Priest stands bowing down at the middle of the Altar.

O most holy and adorable Trinity, vouchsafe to receive this our sacrifice in remembrance of our Saviour's passion, resurrection, and glorious ascension; and grant that we may die with him to our sins, rise with him to a new life, and ascend with him to thee. Let those saints whose memory we celebrate on earth remember us before thy throne in heaven, and obtain mercy for us, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then the Priest, kissing the altar, turns to the people and says, Orate, fratres, &c., that is, Brethren, pray that my sacrifice and yours may be made acceptable to God the Father almighty. Join with him and pray thus:

in cœlis, quorum memo- in heaven, whose memory riam agimus in terris. we celebrate on earth. Per eundem, &c. Amen. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then, turning towards the people, he says:

ORATE, Fratres, ut meum ac vestrum sacrificium acceptabile fiat apud Deum Patrem omnipotentem.

BRETHREN, pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Father almighty.

R. Suscipiat Dominus R. May the Lord resacrificium de manibus ceive the sacrifice from tuis ad laudem et gloriam thy hands, to the praise nominis sui, ad utilitatem and glory of his own quoque nostram, totius- name, and to our benefit, que Ecclesiæ suæ sanctæ. and that of all his holy Church.

SECRET. Sanctify, we beseech thee, O Lord our God, by the invocation of thy holy Name, the Victim of this oblation; and by it make us ourselves an eternal offering to thee. Through, &c.

The creature can offer nothing to the Creator that can be worthy of his acceptance; I unite myself, therefore, to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which can alone merit anything in my behalf. I desire nothing but through him and with him. I have no wish beyond him. O God of mercy, I seek nothing but thy love. Graciously accept of the sacrifice of my heart and of my whole self, together with the sacrifice offered at the hands of thy minister, to the praise and glory of thy name, for our benefit, and that of all thy holy Church. Amen.

Then the Priest says, in a low voice, the prayers called the Secreta prayers.

A Prayer at the Secreta.

Mercifully hear our prayers, O Lord, and graciously accept this oblation which we thy servants make to thee; and as we offer it to the honour of thy name, so may it be to us a means of obtaining thy grace here, and life everlasting hereafter. Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Then the Priest recites the PREFACE (So called because it serves as an introduction to the CANON of the Mass), in which you may join with him as follows;

VERE dignum et justum Ir is truly meet and just, est, æquum et salutare, right and available to salnos tibi semper, et ubique vation, that we should gratias agere, Domine always, and in all places, sancte, Pater omnipo- give thanks to thee, O tens, æterne Deus. Per Christum Dominum nostrum; per quem majestatem tuam laudant angeli, adorant dominationes, tremunt potestates; cœli cœlorumque virtutes, ac beata seraphim, sociâ exultatione concelebrant. Cum quibus et nostras voces, ut admitti jubeas deprecamur supplici confessione dicentes;

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cœli et terra gloriâ tuâ. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

holy Lord, Father almighty, eternal God, Through Christ our Lord; by whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominations adore it, the powers tremble before it; the heavens, the heavenly virtues, and blessed seraphim, with common jubilee glorify it. Together with whom we beseech thee that we may be admitted to join our humble voices, saying;

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
