PREFACE.

THE ease and rapidity with which persons are borne from one point to another in the present day, and the precision with which it is possible to calculate the moment of arrival at any given spot, have removed many of the objections to travel, which formerly prevented those to whom time was an object, from satisfying their curiosity on Foreign Scenes. Travelling has now become one of the necessaries of life, and the numerous facilities for its enjoyment within our reach, have given rise to a natural haste and economy of time-We are on the move, is the cry all over Europe, and the grand object seems to be to get over the most ground and see the greatest possible number of curiosities in the shortest possible time in the same spirit has this work been written.
