by the good hand of God upon the Committee, the work was accomplished.

The 7th of April, 1813, was the day appointed for laying the first stone of the Episcopal Chapel and Schools in Bethnal Green. His Royal Highness, the late Duke of Kent, kindly consented to perform that office. Thus the father of our beloved Queen laid the first stone of the first Episcopal Jews' Chapel, and Her Majesty, the Queen, signed the document which authorized the consecration of the first Protestant Bishop-himself a Jew-for Jerusalem.

SECRET BELIEVERS.

(From the Jewish Herald.)

66

THERE are Jews, who, in their secluded closets, lie at the feet of Jesus, and worship him who is the fountain of life. With such an one had I today a lengthened conversation. He is a young Jew, who has not been long in this country. He is altogether frank and open-hearted. For three years already he has struggled and striven for light, truth, and peace. We had a long conversation, during which he related to me some very interesting experiences he had had. Not long before my departure from Europe," said he, "I paid a visit to my sister, to whom I stated that I was torn asunder from Judaism, and was agitated by the question, whether Christ is not the true Messiah? She stared at me in astonishment. I expected the bitterest reproaches, but I heard something quite different. She drew me into her bed-room, there showed me the Bible and several tracts, and with deep emotion of heart said to me, 'There is no other Messiah than Jesus the Nazarite. I believe this; and I wanted to tell you of it. Listen to what I purpose to do. I must become a Christian.'"-Rev. John Neander's Journal, New York.

THE SAMARITANS.

"The Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans." --John iv. 9.

THE fact thus recorded by the inspired writer is illustrated at the present day. The enmity

between the Samaritans and the Jews still exists. The Rev. F. C. Ewald, in a reccnt missionary journal, tells us of an enquiring Samaritan, who

visited him. "I asked him," says Mr. E., "what difference there was between the Samaritans and the Jews?" he replied, "There is a difference

between us as far as the heavens are above the earth."

66

Will you be so good as to tell me some of your differences?" asked Mr. Ewald.

The Samaritan replied, "The Jews say that here, in Jerusalem, stood the temple to worship God, and that it was here that Abraham offered up Isaac; but this is not true. The temple stood on our holy mountain Gerisim; there Abraham offered up Isaac, and there we worship God; there we sacrifice the Paschal Lamb, and there we celebrate our most holy festivals.'

66

Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." Thus spake the Samaritan woman to our Saviour eighteen hundred years ago, and the same language is in the mouth of the Samaritans even to this day.

THE OPERATIVE JEWISH CONVERTS'
INSTITUTION.

THIS most important Auxiliary, in the great
work of promoting Christianity amongst the
Jews, held its Fourteenth Anniversary on Friday,
May 11th. The venerable President of the
Institution, that long tried friend of Israel, Sir
G. H. Rose, was in the chair.

The report of the Institution shows that the divine blessing rests upon this scriptural and necessary labour of Christian love, and that its
