PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
THE SUCCESS which the first edition of this little book has met with is, I think I may safely say, a sign that the views which I put forth in its Preface have been widely accepted both by teachers and learners. In the present edition the whole has been carefully revised, and such improvements as suggested themselves have been introduced. They will not however be found at all to change the character of the book. As some slight changes in the paging have been caused by this revision, the Index has been carefully adapted to the new numbering, and it has been improved in many other ways.
In answer to many persons who have pressed me to carry on the history further, I can only say that I may very likely do so at some future time, but that I cannot take such a business in hand till the History of the Norman Conquest is completed.
