LIST OF THE PRINCIPAL OFFICERS OF THE KING'S HOUSEHOLD. "MAISON CIVILE." 1. Clergy of the King's household, forming a total of nearly 200 persons. Ecclesiastical officers: "Grand-aumônier de France," assisted by several inferior almoners, confessors, Chaplains: "Maître de l'oratoire du roi," assisted by eight chaplains, eight clerks, sacristans, etc. 2. "Bouche du Roi." For the King's private use: "Le gobelet du roi” (pantry and buttery), comprising upwards of fifty officers and servants. "Cuisine-bouche," comprising upwards of sixty officers and servants. For the use of the whole household: "Panneterie-commun," comprising nearly thirty officers and servants. "Échansonnerie-commun" (buttery), comprising nearly forty officers and servants. "Fruiterie," comprising upwards of thirty officers and servants. "Fourrière" (stores for kitchen purposes), comprising upwards of fifty officers and servants. "Le 3. Lay officers of the King's household, and of his private closet. Upwards of seven hundred. Four companies of French body-guards (1,440) "Gardes de la porte" (50), did duty day and night at the inner doors of the palace. "Gardes de la manche" (24), attended upon the King's person. "Gentilshommes au bec-de-corbin" (two companies, 200); thus called from the shape of their halberds. "Gardes de la prévôté de l'hôtel du roi," a body of police-soldiers; also called "Hoquetons ordinaires du roi."
