Only one other copy on vellum is known-which is in Lord Spencer's library, and which has generally been considered unique. From the facsimile of its De Thou binding, given by Dibdin, it is plain that both copies were bound at the same time (about 1569-70). Consequently the De Thou arms impressed on the Spencer copy must have been impressed at a later date, perhaps over the arms of Catherine de Medici, with whose library that great bibliophile had much to do in 1594. But the Sunderland copy is the presentation copy to the King, and is, notwithstanding the attacks of the worms, in excellent condition, with its curious original back (also richly gilt with the interlacements and the fanfare ornaments in their earliest stage) projecting upwards and downwards, at top and bottom, beyond the level of the sides and front. Nicholas Eve is usually credited with the bindings done for Charles IX, but this was still before the Bartholomew night, and the pattern on the sides is fine enough to warrant a belief that the Huguenot artist who worked for Diane, Catherine, and Henri II, drew the masterly geometrical design here.

III. EARLY VERSIONS.

a. Latin.

It is not known when the Scriptures were first translated inta Latin. In the earlier ages of the faith the Greek text was sufficient in itself for the Christians of the metropolis, where the language of Athens had so large a currency, but the outlying provinces required a Latin version, and we know that one existed in the second century, which has been entitled Africana or Itala, according as it was supposed to have originated in Milan or in Carthage. The rudeness of its language was probably distasteful to the growing Christendom of Rome, when Greek studies decayed there; and St. Jerome was requested to make a new translation, which he accomplished in the course of twenty-three years, between A.D. 382 and 405. This became the Vulgate of the Christian Church, the true Bible of the Middle Ages, and, as a text, ranks next in importance to the Hebrew and the Greek. St. Jerome has usually been considered to have made an entirely new translation, but as a matter of fact he availed himself largely of the labours of his unknown predecessors, and followed to a considerable extent the language of the Itala. Of this older version no complete MS. remains; the existing fragments have been printed by Sabatier (See No. 15910) and Blanchini (15909). 15870 EVANGELIA LATINA QUATUOR, cum prologis, canonibus, et Capitulari evangeliorum de circulo anni, small folio.

MS. on Vellum, in Carolingian minuscules, with the first two pages of each Gospel richly illuminated and bearing the initial words of the Gospel in large Capital and Uncial Letters in gold; the architectural decoration of the Eusebian Canons traced simply in pen and ink, but displaying a great variety of design, with elegant figures of peacocks and other birds as accessory ornaments.

In ancient calf binding, the side inlaid with metal plates and enamel, and set with gems; a Crucifixion carved in ivory and containing three figures, forming a sunken centre-piece of remarkable execution; enclosed in a morocco case, £300. Sec. IX

This MS. so remarkable for its age and preservation, as well as for its binding and sculptured ivory, was described by Montfaucon in the "Bibliotheca Bibliothecarum" (1739) and assigned to the close of the eighth century. It was then in the

possession of the Baron de Crassier, who had obtained it from the collection of the church at St. Pierre, at Liège. A MS. note by the Baron de Crassier, concerning his faithful reparation of the binding, is pasted on the cover of the book.

"La couverture du plat supérieur est un digne ornement de ce beau volume. Au milieu, dans un creux, est enchâssé un ivoire sculpté, représentant Jésus en croix entre la sainte Vierge et Saint Jean. La croix est à deux branches; le corps du Christ y est fixé par quatre clous, et sa tête est entourée d'un nimbe crucifère: signes caractéristiques qui, joints au caractère général de cette sculpture, aux costumes des personnages et à l'ornementation de la bordure de l'encadrement, assignent à cette œuvre une origine byzantine. Son exécution nous paraît être centemporaine du manuscrit. Cet ivoire est entouré d'une bordure en saillie, aux quatre coins de laquelle figurent des plaques carrées en émail champlevé, représentant les quatre évangélistes. Les intervalles sont garnis de lames de métal dorées et ciselées, d'un beau dessin, et ornées de cabochons en cristal de roche, en onyx, en agate, etc., ainsi que de têtes de clous argentées. Cette reliure ne paraît pas bien homogène, car les lames ciselées ne semblent pas avoir primitivement appartenu à ce volume. Elle est cependant telle que le Baron de Crassier l'avait fait reconstituer avec ses anciens éléments, comme il le déclare dans une note écrite sur la couverture. En tout état de cause, ses parties constitutives offrent, par leur archaïsme, un grand intérêt pour l'histoire de l'art."
