15954 BOOK OF ENOCH the prophet, an apocryphal productiou supposed for ages to have been lost, now first translated from an Ethiopic MS by Richard Laurence, 8vo. 25s 15954*PLATT'S Catalogue of the Ethiopic Biblical MSS. in the Royal Library of Paris, and in that of the Bible Society, 4to. facsimiles, bds. 6s

[blocks in formation]

The origin and age of the Gothic Bible (which, however, exists only in a fragmentary state) are well ascertained. It was rendered from the Greek by Wulfila (Ulphilas), Bishop of the Moso-Goths, about A.D. 360-380.

[blocks in formation]

About the middle of the fifth century, the Armenian translation of the Bible was accomplished by the united labours of the Patriarch Isaac, Miesrob, the historian Moses of Chorene, and others. 15969 PSALMS OF DAVID, in Armenian (the literary language), 16mo. the first book printed in the Armenian language, woodcut initials, and woodcuts, including fine representations of Isaac and Mesrob, the authors of the old Armenian version of the Bible, citron morocco extra, gilt edges, £5. (Venice) 1565

EXCESSIVELY RARE; and apparently almost unknown, except that there is a doubtful allusion to it in Bagster's Bible of Every Land, and a proper description in the second volume of Zenker's Bibliotheca Orientalis. It is the first production of the Armenian press instituted by Abgar at Venice. This bears a MS. note of the presentation to a French Bishop by an Armenian Archbishop in 1587.

15970 NEW TESTAMENT, in Armenian, 12mo. woodcuts in the Apocalypse, and of the four Evangelists, original calf extra, with clasps, rich gold tooling on the sides, 20s Amsterdam, 1668 London, 1875

g. Anglo-Saxon, Ancient English.

Whether the Saxons and Angles of Britain had a complete Bible in their own tongue has not been ascertained, but it is probable. The portions which still exist are a glorious inheritance of the English race, and prove that several Scriptural books were rendered into the speech of Bede and Alfred, between the years 720 and 950. 15972 GOSPELS OF THE FOWER EVANGELISTES in the vulgar toung of the Saxons (with the English translation revised from the Bishops Bible added, EDITED BY JOHN FOXE), sm. 4to. Editio Princeps of the Anglo-Saxon Scriptures, published at the expense of Archbishop Matthew Parker, with the very rare dedication to Queen Elizabeth, first leaf written on, sound copy in calf, from the Sunderland library, £40.

15973

1571

another copy, sm. 4to. a leaf mended, purple morocco extra, gilt edges, £31. 10s

1571

A volume of extreme rarity, evidently never seen by Lowndes, as he states that it is dedicated to Archbishop Parker instead of Queen Elizabeth. Even in the XVIIth century the rarity of copies was so great, that a former owner of Earl Spencer's copy, in a MS. note, records "I was twenty yeares looking for to buy one of these bookes."

Cudbert's Evangelienbuche, mit Glossare, von K. W. Bouterwek, 8vo. facsimiles, hf. cf. 7s 6d Gütersloh, 1857 15980 GOSPEL according to St. Matthew, in (four) Anglo-Saxon_and Northumbrian versions, synoptically arranged (edited by J. M. Kemble and C. Hardwick), 4to. cloth, 78 Cambridge, 1858 15981 GOSPEL according to St. Mark, St. Luke, and St. John, Anglo-Saxon and Northumbrian versions, synoptically arranged, ed. W. W. Skeat. 3 vols. 4to. cloth, 21s Camb. 1871-78

These three vols. complete the unfinished work of J. M. Kemble. The great value of this book is, that it gives the biblical text in all their most ancient English forms. The two direct translations are Anglo-Saxon, as written down by scribes in the southern part of England, one about A.D. 1000, the other 1150. The two indirect versions are supplied by Northumbrian or Anglish glosses. on a Latin text, one written about 950, the other within a century afterwards.

h. Slavonic.

It is not known when the entire translation of the Bible into Slavonic was completed; but there is no doubt that at least the New Testament was rendered by the Greek missionaries SS. Cyril and Methodius, before A.D. 880, into the tongue of the Slavs of Moravia, the parent of the modern Servian.

Fetched £6. 15s at the Sunderland sale. A MS. account of the volume and a letter to the Duke of Marlborough, signed by J. Oxford (Bishop John Butler), 1786, are inserted. This is the second edition of the Slavonic Bible, and was reprinted from the Ostrog Bible of 1581.

i. Arabic.

St. Petersb. 1822 Nyu York, 1877 vetkhago i Novago St. Petersb. 1818

Different Arabic translations of the Bible are said to have existed in the sixth, seventh, and eighth centuries;-there seems to be but little doubt that at least one was current amongst Arabized Christians at the beginning of the eighth.

15989 EPISTLES and ACTS OF THE APOSTLES, in Arabic, ancient MS. on bombycine paper, bd. £25. ? Syria, Sec. XIII

As compared with equally ancient copies of the Gospels in Arabic, this volume of the Acts and Epistles is of exceeding rarity. It is not quite perfect, but its value and importance as a Biblical codex are of a very high order; and as for its age and origin, we may conclude that this MS. was written in Syria not long after the death of the great Saladin.

It is believed that only 25 copies were sent to England, with the English title and dedication in front of the Old Testament; and certainly most of them have now disappeared. The chief collection of Eliot Bibles was Mr. Brinley, of Connecticut ;-he had several copies of the book, but only one with the English dedication and title. It sold in 1878 for 1000 dollars.
