16027 BIBLIJ CZESKA, stout folio, black letter, coloured woodcuts, a few letters in bi defective, otherwise a fine copy in vellum, with clasps, FIRST EDITION FOR THE USE OF THE HUSSITES, EXTREMELY RARE, £40. Venetiis in edibus Petri Lichtenstein, 1506

Of this excessively rare edition only three or four other copies are known. Like most early Bibles, the present copy has several leaves mended, but is evidently otherwise perfect, and probably stands alone in this respect.

Lichtenstein's Bohemian Bible is even scarcer than the Illyrian Preces and the Breviarum Croaticum twice printed by Andreas Asulanus in the same city. Consult Ungar, and the various notices by the bibliographers Le Long, Goetze, Clement, Videkind, Kleich, and Elsner, who all speak unequivocally of its rarity and value.

Ungar has remarked as curious that this edition was not suppressed or censured by the Church on its appearance, in spite of an objectionable woodcut which might have betrayed its heretical origin. This is the engraving to the sixth chapter of the Apocalypse, in which the Pope appears lying in hell. 16028 NOWY ZAKON (New Testament in Bohemian), 12mo. woodcut title, LARGE PAPER, very fine copy in red morocco extra, gilt edges, £2. s. l. (Kraliç), 1596

A beautiful little volume, printed in a small Gothic character. It is the first separate edition of the New Testament which had already appeared in the Bohemian Bible printed at the Castle of Kralic, in Moravia, 1579-93. 16028* BIBLJ SWATA, 2 vols. in 1, stout 8vo. calf, 78

16043 WYCLIFFE'S ENGLISH TESTAMENT. THE NEW TESTAMENT TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH BY JOHN WYCLIFFE, small folio.

Fine perfect MS. on vellum, with the autograph of GOOD DUKE HUMPHREY ("A vous me ly Glou cester," i.e., à vous je me lie) on the first page; being Codex S of Sir Frederick Madden's edition; bound in rough old calf and enclosed in a red leather bag, from the library of the late Thomas Banister, £1000. about 1390

This precious Manuscript is the only perfect early codex of Wycliffe's work that can ever be offered for sale. It may be regarded as unique from many points of view. Of the seventeen genuine copies of Wycliffe's Testament which are known to exist, fourteen are in great public libraries, the fifteenth is in that of Lord Ashburnham, and the sixteenth in that of Sir Thomas Phillipps. Only eight of the sixteen are perfect, and amongst the imperfect ones is that of Sir Thos. Phillipps. Furthermore, only three copies are known of a date earlier than 1400, and of these three the Banister MS. is the only perfect one. And finally, so far as the prologues to some of the Epistles are concerned, it supplied the only available text for Sir F. Madden's edition.

Of the 170 MSS. that pass under Wycliffe's name, only the seventeen above mentioned have a right to bear it. They contain the New Testament, the translation of which he completed about 1380; most copies of which, on the judgment pronounced against him as a heretic in 1381, were destroyed or mutilated. The MSS. usually met with are copies of an independent and different version executed some thirty or forty years afterwards, the success of which caused the then existing codices of Wycliffe's genuine work to become still scarcer than before. Of the Old Testament there exist likewise two differing versions, the earlier of which was in similar manner effaced by the later; but Wycliffe had nothing to do with that part of the Bible. A MS. of the complete Bible recently changed hands at the price of a thousand guineas, but it was not Wycliffe's monumental work; only a fifteenth century copy of the commoner translation made after the death of the great protagonist.

Amongst the Egerton MSS. in the British Museum there is a Wycliffite Bible, which originally belonged to Humphrey Duke of Gloucester, and bears his arms. This circumstance, and the autograph on the present MS. show that the "Good Duke " was a friend to Wycliffe's followers, and that his signature was held to be a useful addition on books belonging to his friends. Wycliffe's New Testament was a perilous piece of property at that time, and the holder strove to win assurance of protection from one more powerful than himself.

New Testament, reprinted (with introduction by Skeat), 12mo. cloth, 4s 6d Oxford, 1869 16048 NEW TESTAMENT, published in 1526, being the first translation into English by TYNDALE, reprinted verbatim, with memoir of his life by George Offor, sm. 4to. printed within red rulings, with portrait plain and coloured, the reprint of original title illuminated, blue morocco, gilt edges, £2. 16s 1526 [1836] 16049 [TYNDALE'S PENTATEUCH.] The secon❘ de boke of Moses, call- | led Exodus-The thyrde bo-ke of Moses, cal- led Leuiti-cus-The four | the boke of Moses called | Numeri-[DEUTERONOMYE]-4 vols. in 1, sm. 8vo. fine copy in the original boards covered with leather, £210. (1530)

The only perfect copy known is in the Grenville library; there are six imperfect ones in existence (including this) of which three are in public libraries. The above copy is in magnificent condition, sound and fine as when it was brought to England. The names of John Halle and John Bennett appear in contemporary red ink on the title-pages. The book of Numbers (like the absent book of Genesis) is in Gothic characters; the other three are in Roman characters,-from which circumstance it has been surmised that Tyndale, having already produced Genesis and Numbers at Marburg (as shown by the known imprint of Genesis), printed Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy in a different town (Cotton says probably Hamburg). But the few Gothic letters which appear on the title-pages of Exodus and Leviticus (Deuteronomy has not a separate title, but begins with the text under a head-line) are identical in type with the corresponding letters in Genesis and Numbers; and what is more, each of the three title-pages is surrounded by a woodcut border which is identical in all. Therefore, although the Roman type, in certain characteristic features, bears a strong likeness to that which was used by Nucio at Antwerp, the whole five books must have been produced at a single press, or else Tyndale carried the woodblock of the titles with him wherever he went, which is scarcely likely. There are two editions of the Genesis; the first one, dated 1530, in Gothic type like Numbers, tne other, dated 1534, in Roman type like Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy. Hence it has been usually stated that there were two editions of Tyndale's Pentateuch, one of 1530 and the other of 1534, while these were in truth merely two issues of the
